Augustus Schumatti Obituary
AGE: 72 • Jupiter, FL, formerly of Point Pleasant
Augustus (Augie) Schumatti, 72, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2012 after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease. Augie was predeceased by his wife, Dolores in 1985. Surviving are his sons, John and Augie and his wife Sara; his daughter, Gloria Schumatti Amogretti; his sister, Teresa Wray and her husband Richard; and 3 grandchildren, Amanda Amogretti, William and Luke Schumatti.
After serving his country in the US Army, he went into the construction business with his life long friend Simone Palermo. In the early 70's he began a long and successful career in the harness horse racing industry. Augie's true passion was being a horse trainer. For almost 40 years Augie trained horses at The Meadowlands, Freehold, Yonkers, Chester, Pocono Downs and other numerous racetracks throughout the tri-state area. One of his most distinguished accomplishments as a trainer was in 1981 when his horse Nigel Craig won 8 races in a row at The Meadowlands in New Jersey. This achievement, at the time, established a new record for trotters and tied an already existing record for pacers.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 30 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Hwy. 88, Brick. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, July 31 at 11:00 AM at St. Martha's Church, Pt. Pleasant. Entombment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Wall Twp. All family and friends are welcome to honor Augie's life.
