Carl Gardiner Obituary

Dr. Carl W. Gardiner, Jr.

AGE: 74 • Red Bank

Dr. Carl W. Gardiner Jr. died on March 17, 2017 in Jupiter, FL at the age of 74. He was born on September 4, 1942 in Orange, NJ and grew up in Short Hills, where he attended Millburn High School. He was graduated from Lafayette College, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He served in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1970, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Dr. Gardiner practiced Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery in Red Bank, NJ for forty years. He completed his residency at New York University/Bellevue Hospital, where he was Chief Resident. He was on the teaching staff at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch and on staff at Riverview Hospital in Red Bank. He loved caring for his patients; in the evening, he would call to check in on each one he had seen that day.

He was an active member of his communities. Carl served as Police Commissioner and President of the Town Council of Shrewsbury, NJ. He was an active member at Christ Church Shrewsbury, including serving as Senior Warden for many years. He was also President of the Board of The Rumson Country Club and an active member of the New Jersey Seniors Golf Association.

Throughout his life, he loved boating and the beach, painting portraits of his family and friends, and above all else, playing golf. He retired to Florida in 2013, where he took up bridge and enjoyed his days swimming in the ocean, reading in the sun, grilling and eating home-cooked meals, and of course playing golf. He was a generous friend to many, who will remember him for his humility and kindness, an easy demeanor, and a great capacity for fun.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Janet Taylor Gardiner, and his three children: Sara and her husband Michael Parmelee of Highlands, NJ; Carl and his wife Polly Riemenschneider of New Canaan, CT; and Lee and her husband Alec Koch of Washington, D.C. In small, manageable doses, he delighted in his six grandsons: Kyle Frechette, whose father Kevin remains beloved in our memory; Sam, Hugh and Auggie Gardiner; and Eliot and Henry Koch. He is also survived by his two adoring sisters, Pamela Machado and Ann Drake.

Memorial services will be held at 11 am on April 18 at Saint Georges By the River, 7 Lincoln Avenue, Rumson, NJ 07760. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation, www.lustgarten.org.

Dear Jan and Family,
I'm so sad to hear if Carl's passing. He will be missed for his kind, quiet steadiness. I have always admired both of you and have always held Carl in the highest esteem. I worked briefly in his office and he was one of the kindest people I've known. His presence will be noticed and missed. I'm glad you had some quality time together since his diagnosis and we wish that those good memories will help sustain you in your grief. Wishing you much love, Kristen and Rich Gillette

Carl studied painting with me on Tuesdays for quite a few years and I looked forward to talking with him, and watching his paintings - which reflected his deep love for family - develop.

I bereave his gentle, kind spirit - a man who would always be sitting in the hallway around 7 pm, taking a break to call the patients that he had "worked on" during the day.

I will miss you Carl - the class misses you as well; a deep sense of grief descended on those of us who knew you when we heard the news. My condolences go to Jan and the entire family. A lovely man is no longer with us - I regret that I did not get a chance to wave goodbye.

The Doc was a beacon of wisdom in our neighborhood in Shrewsbury. He was kind, caring, thoughtful, and supportive in his own understated way. And as with many talented people, he somehow made life look easy. I am very saddened by the news of his passing and will hold close many fond memories of him, including his 'great capacity for fun.' Blessings on the Doc, Jan, and the family.

I know Heaven is a little brighter now that Carl is in it because he was such a bright light here with us. I had the good fortune to work alongside Carl and to call him my friend for 30 years. From a young 21 year old until we both retired. He taught me about dentistry and about life. We shared happy and sad times and the milestones of our families. Carl was an excellent surgeon with a kind and generous heart. What a wonderful combination! I will miss him terribly but I will cherish the memories of our time together. All my love to Jan and their beautiful family.

With much love, Debbie Taddeo

Carl was one of the kindest men I knew. There wasn't a finer gentleman. Jan and Carl were like family to me. He will be missed in body but not in spirit. My life is better just to have known both of them, Sara and of course Percy.

While our hearts are heavy, we reach out to share a moment, a laugh, a story and realize that Carl is no longer there physically. Our hearts are however, full with the gratitude for the connection we had, the memories we hold on to, the hope of a spiritual connection of the unknown, and know these will never perish. Missing our friend Carl today, tomorrow and always. Understanding the loss for the entire Gardiner family and praying for God to comfort them all. Until we meet again dear friend....

Peace and Love,
Jeff and Melissa

Carl was my friend and I will be forever grateful for having him in my life. There is no one that has ever demonstrated a more positive outlook, humility, and faith even through his most difficult trials. He was a real gentleman in every sense of the word as well as a wonderful husband, father, and friend. Like the rest of us, I will miss Carl. My prayers are with Jan and his family.

Bonnie and I simply cannot think of Carl without a warm feeling in our hearts and a smile on our face. We were privileged to know him since our freshman year at Lafayette in 1960. He and Jan were a shining example to us as young marrieds. A true friend, a dear brother, a collector of blue-checked shirts, and one heck of a golfer (how about that low, long, straight drive!). You have gone on ahead of us, but we'll see you eventually in the presence of God!

Last time we saw you was at the "Dooney Dog" and you were so polite when my foot long hot dog shot a cross the table. Suave, polite, classy guy delivered it back without batting an eye. God bless you and your family.
