Charles J. Northshield, 94, of Berkeley Twp., passed away Friday, April 6, 2012, at home. Born in New York City, NY, he lived in Long Island, NY before moving to Berkeley Twp. 27 years ago. Mr. Northshield served in the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a Foreman for the New York City Department of Sanitation for 20 years, retiring in 1967. Charles volunteered for Hospice, the Lighthouse of Ocean County, Big Brothers, Long Island, and Meals on Wheels; assisted in the soup kitchen of Westchester County; served as a Boy Scouts Leader for Troop 106, Long Island, for 20 years; and was an EMT in Long Island and in Silver Ridge Park, Berkeley Twp. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Knights of Columbus, all of Long Island. He was also a parishioner and usher at St. Joseph R.C. Church, Toms River.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anastasia "Nancy" Northshield (nee Somers), in 2001. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Charles Jr. and Liz Northshield of Rye, NY, Margaret and Bob Michel of Little Silver, Tom and Dena Northshield of Belgium, and Ed and Michelle Northshield of Dover, Delaware; as well as 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY will be private. A Memorial Mass will be offered at St. Joseph RC Church, Toms River at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Redeemer Hospice. Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd. Toms River, NJ is in charge of the arrangements.
