Charles Riggs Obituary
AGE: 95 • Forked River
Charles J. Riggs, age 95, of Forked River passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at his home. Born and raised in Hammonton, Charlie moved to Barnegat in 1940 as the apprentice to J. Anderson Bugbee of the Bugbee Funeral Home in Barnegat, in 1959 he relocated to Ship Bottom before moving to Forked River in 1973. Charlie and his late wife Virginia had owned and operated Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Homes of Barnegat and Ship Bottom and the Riggs Funeral Home of Forked River until his retirement several years ago. He was proud to see his son Bob continue to run the funeral homes and to witness his three grandchildren become funeral directors and work in the family business.
From 1958 until 1985 he had built many homes on Long Beach Island and was instrumental in the development of High Bar Harbor in Barnegat Light.
He was a communicant of St. Pius X R.C. Church and had served as an usher at the 10 am mass for many years, and was a 3rd Degree Knight with KOC—Fr. Capodanno
Council #6522 of Forked River.
Charlie was a past member of the Old Guard Chapter 19, AARP, Italian American Club and Republican Club all of Forked River, the Exchange Club of Long Beach Island, the Beach Haven Moose #1745 of Manahawkin and Mariners Lodge #150 F&AM of Barnegat.
He was pre-deceased by his two sons Charles J., Jr in 1955, Gary J. in 1992 and Virginia in 2011. Surviving are his son Bob and his wife Cindy of Forked River, three grandchildren Robert and his wife Victoria, Julie and Crystal and her husband Nicholas. Also surviving are two great-grandsons Milo and Dustin.
A Viewing will be held on Sunday, January 17, 2016 from 2-5 pm at the Riggs Funeral Home 130 North Route 9, Forked River. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered on Monday 10:30 am at St. Pius X R.C. Church Lacey Road, Forked River. Entombment will follow at St. Mary's Parish Cemetery Beachview Ave., Manahawkin.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked for contributions to be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9956 or a charity of your choice in Charlie's memory.

Much sympathy being sent to Mr.Riggs family and all who love him. My daddy was a plumbing contractor and did lots of work for Mr. Riggs in the 50's or 60's.....I was just a child then and I remember him, his cigar and his kindness! God Bless. Sincerely, Elaine Spierling-Fuller
