EDWIN J. "TED" FREED
AGE: 82 WALL
Edwin J. Freed "Ted", 82, of Wall, passed away Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at the Wexford Assisting Living. He was born in Epsom, England. He served in the British Army during World War II in the Malaysian Campaign. He became a steeplechase jockey at the age of 16. When his jockey career was over, he became a manager for British Bloodstock Agency under Tom Dunkley. There he shipped horses all over the world. He made trips to Argentina to personally deliver horses to Juan and Evita Peron, Fredrico Tesio in Italy and was an associate of Elizabeth Arden and her Main Chance Farm. Ted came to the United States in 1963 and continued his involvement with horses for the next 40 years. First worked for Chasmar Farm in Spring Lake, and then managed a riding academy in Paramus. Later returned to the race track as an assistant trainer then a manager of Allaire Farms in Wall for 10 years and worked in security for Due Process Stable for 20 years, retiring in 2003.
Ted was predeceased by his long time companion, Marge Casey. He was a native of England and the son of the late Edwin Charles and May Victoria Watkins Freed. He is survived by his sisters, Joyce Van Der Swan of Andover, Hampshire, England and Iris McDonnell of Wallingham, Surrey, England; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved friends, Francis X Keegan, Nancy Wolek and Pat O'Toole.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 at the Wexford Assisted Living, Spring Lake. Interment will be private. Memorial donations can be made to Rerun Thoroughbred Horse Rescue, P.O. Box 113, Helmetta, NJ 08828 or [email protected].
