EVERETT F. SMITH
AGE: 87 SEA GIRT
Everett F. Smith, 87, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, March 31, 2010, in the care of his loving family. Born in Union City, NJ, he grew up in Wood Ridge and was a member of the first class to graduate from Wood Ridge High School. He is a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the destroyer USS Renshaw in the South Pacific and earning a business degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University on the GI bill upon his return from military service. His career began at Western Electric Co. in Kearny and led to jobs in defense contracting at Kearfott Company's General Precision Equipment division and Singer Company in Little Falls. After retiring, he worked for the government at Fort Monmouth for an additional 15 years. He was a true-blue Giants fan who followed the team from the Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium in New York to the Yale Bowl in CT to the NJ Meadowlands.
He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of 61 years, Maureen (born McParlin), four daughters, their spouses, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Christine Nemec of VT, her son Jason, daughter-in-law Dana and their boys Max and Elliott; Maureen & Steve Williams of Oceanport, their son Russ and daughters Tara and Jenna; Eileen & Norman Hall of Sea Girt, their daughters Cassandra and Melissa; Kathleen & Jeff Heiss of Fair Haven, their son Tom and daughter Kelly. Everett was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Henrietta Smith; and his sister, Ruth Strong of Wood Ridge. He has two nieces, Myra and Ellen.
Following their marriage in 1949, Everett and Maureen raised their family in Hasbrouck Heights and Ridgewood before moving to Sea Girt in 1980. In his later years, "Ev" was a familiar figure as a badge checker on the Sea Girt boardwalk, greeting residents and beachgoers with his friendly smile.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday April 6, 2010, at 9:30am at St. Mark's RC Church, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt.
