Irene Kappel Obituary

Irene Elizabeth Kappel

AGE: 97 • Forked River

Irene (Dixie) Elizabeth Thein Kappel, 97, of Forked River, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 10. Dixie was born on August 20, 1918 in Washington, DC to Charles Thein from Dover, NJ and Irene Early Thein Cribb from Fishs Eddy, NY. Since she was born below the Mason-Dixon Line, her parents nicknamed her Dixie.

She is survived by her son, Bruce Henry Kappel of Brookside and his wife, Nanci; her sister, Mary Thein Camburn of Forked River; her sister-in-law, Ruth Thein of Melbourne, FL; many nieces, nephews, numerous friends and her caregiver, Beth Bigos. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry F. Kappel, and her brothers, Jim, Frank, Al and Bob. Although she lived in several states as a child, she always thought of herself as a Forked River native. Dixie's father moved the family there when he was the onsite representative for the Barnegat Pines development. His wife and 6 kids also had their "job" to do: they went down to the lake to swim and play when prospective buyers came to look at the lots for sale. She had an amazing memory and told many colorful stories about those, and other, times. Dixie married Hank on May 15, 1942. They lived in Newark, where they both worked, then moved to Roseland where they lived for many years before she returned to Forked River in 1979. She was actively involved in the Women's Club of Lacey, the Historical Society and the Garden Club. She also enjoyed playing cards and visiting with "the girls" on a regular basis and was known for her witty sense of humor. Dixie lived a long, full, healthy life and was cherished by her family and friends.

Donations in honor of Dixie's memory may be made to the Lacey Township First Aid Squad. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
