Maria Chaplin Obituary
AGE: 91 • Whiting
Maria Manuela Gomes da Luz Chaplin, 91, of Whiting, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, in her home at 41-A Crestwood Parkway. She was born on April 3, 1923 in Santos O Velho de Lisboa, Portugal, daughter of Manuel Francisco Pessoa da Luz and Celestina Pereira Gomes da Luz. Manuela was a prolific and highly productive community organizer and has been especially recognized for the tremendous work accomplished on behalf of several Portuguese-American communities in several states and aboard. She is survived by her three daughters and three nieces. A celebration of Manuela's life and memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 180 Route 539, Whiting. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made in Mrs. Chaplin's name to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

It is only now that I become aware of Manuela's passing a decade ago, no wonder I wasn't hearing from her. She was indeed a veritable community organizer and a loyal friend. My deepest pésame to her surviving family.
