Nicholas Thomas Giglio, 32, of Dalzell, S.C., died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, in the line of duty while piloting an Air Force F-16 fighter jet over the coast of South Carolina in service to his nation.
A private military memorial service was conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 at Shaw Air Force Base. In remembrance, a Celebration of Life Service will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at Lacey Township High School. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service starting at 1 p.m.
Captain Giglio was born Dec. 18, 1976 in Toms River to the parents of Jerry and Helen (Lokken) Giglio. He graduated from Lacey Township High School in 1995. Captain Giglio enlisted in the Air Force, where he was first assigned to McGuire Air Force Base, NJ as an aircraft communications/navigations systems journeyman on the C-141. In 1998, Captain Giglio received a military scholarship, allowing him to pursue a Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., as well as complete the ROTC program with Detachment #157. He commissioned as an Air Force Officer in May 2003. He received his Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training at Sheppard AFB, TX in 2004. He continued at Sheppard as a first assignment instructor pilot with the T-37, as well as completed the introduction to fighter fundamentals program in July 2008. Captain Giglio trained to fly the F-16 at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas. He was just recently assigned to the 77th F-16 Fighter Squadron at Shaw AFB, SC. Captain Giglio was married to Leigh Lauren Costa on July 1, 2000. He became a father to his daughter, Grace, in 2008 and will become a father to a son, Caleb, in 2010. He was a wonderful husband, loving father, loyal son and brother, as well as a friend to all. He will be dearly missed.
Captain Giglio is survived by his wife, Leigh; children, Grace, and unborn son, Caleb; his parents, Jerry and Helen; a sister, Tracy; and a sister-in-law, Carmen.

Captain Giglio will be laid to his eternal rest among his fellow Heroes at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18 on the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Layton's Home For Funerals, Forked River, is in charge of arrangements.
