Robert Witham Obituary

Robert G. Witham

AGE: 81 • Spring Lake

Robert G. Witham, 81, of Spring Lake was called home to the Lord on August 8, 2017. Bob was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and, for the past fifty-eight years, has been a resident of Spring Lake. Bob served his country in the United States Army and, in civilian life, was an electrical engineer at Fort Monmouth, retiring in 1988. Bob was the consummate community volunteer serving his community in the Spring Lake First Aid Squad, serving terms as squad captain, a member of Spring Lake Fire Company #1, serving two years each as deputy chief and chief of the Spring Lake Fire Department, and remained active in the fire service as a member of the fire police in both Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights and in fire preventions initiatives.

Bob was a member of the Ocean Monmouth Radio Club and Military Affiliated Radio Systems and was also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for over 43 years and enjoyed boating with family and friends on his boat, the Chalet.

A Master Mason for over 60 years, Bob was a member of Ocean Lodge #89, Scottish Rite for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction for 25 years and was a member of the Freehold High 12 Club.

Bob was a member of St. Andrew's Church, Spring Lake, where he enjoyed singing in the choir and being a member of the Men's Club.

Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia, son William, and his wife, Brenda, of Granbury, Texas; daughter Cheri Mannix of Bel Air, Maryland; grandchildren Brett, Taylor and Shea Mannix, Belinda Linker and her husband, Andrew; Brian Witham and great grandchild Collyn Linker.

Visitation will be on Sunday, August 13, 2017 from 2-5 PM at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan, NJ. Funeral Services will follow at 5 PM at the funeral home. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. Andrew's Church, Spring Lake.

Our deepest sympathy on the loss of Bob, a brilliant gentleman, who lived a full life of purpose and commitment to all, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and true friend. Patti, Bill and Cheri, thank you for being the best friends and neighbors we could ever ask for. Praying for you in the days ahead. I will never forget Bob's musical greetings, " Here she comes, "Miss-cellaneous". Love always, Stephan, Barbie, Clarissa, Nick and family.

Bob, you were and always will be one of Spring Lake's finest. People who unselfishly give to their community as a way of life are a dwindling breed. I have many fond memories of you and my Dad, and in my perhaps somewhat peculiar view of eternal life..........you indeed have eternal life through the people who knew you and those loved you. Rest easy Brother Bob, a job well done.

Patty, My sincerest condolences to you and your family. Bob was the poster guy for a dedicated Auxiliarist, volunteer, mentor and husbnd/father who could be counted on at all times. He will be sorely missed. Bob Myers

Spring Lake has lost a true original with the passing of Bob Witham. Bob gave a lifetime of community service as a volunteer fireman and past fire chief, volunteer first aid member and past captain, active fire policeman, and continued that community service into his 80's! A true and loyal friend and brother Mason, Bob made a difference in people's lives every day through his community service. Those of us who had the privilege of knowing Bob were truly blessed. Wishing Pat, Sherry and Bill thoughts and prayers during this time of loss and sorrow.

Spring Lake will miss this consummate community volunteer: fireman - past fire chief, first aid member - past captain, fire police member, still active in community service at 80 years of age, active choir member at St. Andrew's Church, motorcyclist with that beautiful Harley trike and a true friend and brother Mason. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "What we do for ourselves alone, dies with us. What we do for others remains, and is immortal." Bob's legacy of service to others will continue for years to come. Those of us who knew Bob were truly blessed. Thoughts and prayers to Pat, Sherry and Bill during this time of sorrow.
