Ruth Levinson Obituary

Ruth Levinson

Elberon

Ruth Levinson passed away in Dallas, TX Monday, March 19, 2012. She was born Ruth Lee Mass on November 23, 1921 in Norwalk, Connecticut and worked in New York City for the FBI until she met and married the love of her life, George Levinson, with whom she was married 51 years. Ruth and George were devoted to each other, and to their children Nancy and Woody. In 1957, at the age of 10 years old, Nancy lost her battle with leukemia. In memory of this loss, Ruth dedicated herself to volunteering for the New Jersey Blood Bank. Ruth and George's home in Elberon, N.J., and especially their backyard bbq's, was the meeting place for the extended family for decades. When family and friends came to visit, Ruth always made everyone feel at home with her warmth, cooking and baking. She wanted to be remembered as "the lady who made a great chocolate cake."

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Abe and Goldie Mass; her beloved husband, George and their daughter, Nancy; brother, Mort; in-laws, Louis and Sylvia Levinson; niece, JoAnn, and her best friends and in-laws, Blanche and Milt Wasserman. Ruth is survived by, and greatly missed by her son, Woody and his wife Karen, and Ruth's granddaughter, Mara, who Ruth always believed was her personal Rx, "just the medicine the doctor ordered." Ruth is also survived by and also greatly missed by her nieces, Lyn Linse, Thelma Myers (and husband Marvin), Anita Morgan (and husband Tom), and nephew, Howard Wasserman and his wife Wendy, and all of their children, cousins and friends. She will also be missed by sister in law, Pat Mass and her daughters, Ande, Patsy, and Barbara Mass. Those who affectionately knew Ruth as "Gram," and who had the pleasure of visiting her New Jersey home and eating her pumpkin chiffon pie will always remember her.

"As long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us, as long as we remember them."

The family looks forward to being comforted by Rabbi Jack and Ali Friedman, who have been such close friends of the family for decades. Donations can be made to memorial Sloan Kettering, PO Box 27106, NYC, New York, 10087.

She will always be my favorite aunt. I have so many wonderful memories of her and the family get-togethers. She was always so welcoming to me. She will be remembered by me until I die.

I shall miss my lovely Aunt Ruth. She was so kind , thoughtful and had great sense of humour. Her hospitality and famous chocolate during my many visits will be remembered forever.

Ruth Levinson was as sweet, kind, and fun to be with as she was pretty, and that's saying a lot. I thought of Ruth as a second mother, because 55 years ago, when Ruth's daughter, Nancy, died at the age of ten, I was Nancy's best friend. So, as a child I mourned Nancy's passing, but I literally carried her in my heart...for the next fifty years. Three years ago, I searched for "Harold" and Ruth on the Internet because I wanted to tell them how much I still loved Ruth's little girl. The Ruth that I found was as lovely as she was all those years ago. And I will miss her, just as I will miss Nancy until the day I die.

I was sad to see your Mom's obituary today. The photo looks just like I remeber her, as I was your neighbor in Wanamassa. I used to share peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with you on your patio which your Mom would make for us when we played together. I remember the sadness in the entire neighborhood when your sister died. My thoughts are with you, Harold.

Beautiful (inside and out), graceful, warm, but she had to be, after all , she was dear Goldie's beloved daughter. Good memories! Peaceful rest/.
