Tschon Ombadykow Obituary

Tschon Namru Ombadykow

formerly of Howell

Tschon Ombadykow passed away on December 8, 2012 in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was born in Liege, Belgium on Aug. 13, 1949, to a family of Kalmyk Mongolians who had been displaced from their homelands during WW II. He immigrated to the U.S. with his family at age six, and grew up in Freewood Acres in Howell, N.J. Tschon lived his life true to his name, as "Tschon" in Mongolian means "wolf." After moving to Philly, Tschon roamed through Vermont, Virginia, North Carolina, Boston, Nevada and Arizona. In the early 90's, Tschon found his way to Alaska where he settled in Fairbanks, married and raised a family. He worked in construction at the University of Alaska, using their library to pursue his passion for history and culture. He will be remembered for the many humorous stories of his life experiences. Forging a 63-year life of laughter, compassion and knowledge, Tschon was more than a father, a brother and uncle to his family, he was a teacher who encouraged everyone to be "students of life," to pursue their dreams and passions.

Tschon is survived by his daughter, Dolma; son, Alex; sisters, Ketty, Rolma and Gerel; brothers, Zeren, Dava, Jigmid and Telo Tulku Rinpoche. He is further survived by a loving family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to name. He leaves behind his former wives, Stephanie Jordan and Cyd Redfield, with whom he remained good friends.

A religious service to bid him best wishes as he journeys on to his next life, is planned for Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012 at Nitsan Buddhist Temple. Service starts at 12:00 pm followed by a reception. Donations may be made to: Nitsan Buddhist Temple, Inc., 186 West 6th St., Howell, N. J. 07731.

Hi Tschon - I still tell a story about you once in a while. It must have been about seven years ago - I was sitting at Ivory Jacks having a drink, telling a friend that my Subaru had just broke down, and I was stuck taking cabs to work until I could get my car worked on. You approached me, and said "Several years ago, you picked me up when I was hitchhiking, and brought me where I needed to go. That was such a kind favor, I'm going to let you use my spare truck until you can get your car taken care of". And just like that, you handed me your keys and showed me how to drive your big diesle. What a kind thing you did for me, and I borrowed that truck for three weeks. It was such an act of kindness, I have told people about it within the past 7 years. I also enjoyed our conversations, and yes, I do recall us talking about us being related people because you are Mongolian and I am Cup'ik eskimo. One thing the obituary didnt mention - your love for your dogs! You loved them so much, and took special care of them. They were like your kids. Thank you for inviting me over that day and letting me see your dogs. It was a pleasure to meet you, Tschon, and to know you for the several years that I knew you. I will never forget your kindness.
