TUDY NAFTALIS
AGE: 93 JACKSON
Tudy Naftalis passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 17, 2009, at Bartley Healthcare in Jackson, NJ. Born in Newark on May 24, 1916, she was the fifth of six daughters born to Harry and Fanny Pochtar. She attended schools in Newark and then moved to Bradley Beach to raise her family at the Shore. While living there, she was an active fundraiser for both Hadassah and Deborah Hospital.
Tudy, a homemaker, was an expert designer and seamstress and also knitted beautiful prize-winning dresses and sweaters. Her stylish creations were often displayed in knitting shops at the Shore.
When her husband retired, they moved to South Florida where together they both became champion bowlers. They were unbeatable and enjoyed the sport until his death in December of 1991. She continued to compete in bowling matches until her eyesight started to fail. She relocated to New Jersey in 2000.
Tudy was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Irving, of 57 wonderful years; her son-in-law, Reuben Butensky; and her sisters Betty Pochtar and Julia Kremer. She is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Barbara Butensky, Morganville; her son Alan, Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Karyn, Debbie, Beth, Paul, and Lori. Also surviving are great-grandchildren Rachel, David, Joshua, Bradley, Nicolas, and Christopher; a sister, Anita Field, and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Monday, December 21 at 11:00 AM at the Boris Polar Cemetery on McClellan Street in Newark. Arrangements are under the direction of Belkoff Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Lakewood.
If desired, donations may be made in memory of Tudy Naftalis to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, 400 Morris Avenue, Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Barbara Butensky.
