MAC GREGOR
AGE: 90 BAYVILLE
Lt. Colonel (Ret.) William D. Mac Gregor, 90, of Bayville, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at home. Born in Dalmuir, Scotland, he lived in Basking Ridge prior to moving to Bayville 12 years ago. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, entering the service in November 1941. He fought in the Battle of Okinawa as a tank battalion commander and was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal. William completed his service with the 78th Reserve Division, retiring in November 1978 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He graduated from New York University with a Bachelors and Masters degree in Business. William managed the Accounting Dept. at Ciba Geigy, Summit, and later became the CFO for RP Scherer, Somerset. He was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Toms River, a member of the Association of United States Army "AUSA" and an avid boater.
Predeceased by his first wife, Anne nee Fuchs, William is survived by his wife, Elsie D. nee Brookwell; his son, David and partner Kirk of Basking Ridge; two stepsons, William and wife Laura of Colonia, and Charles and partner Sheila of Hillsborough,; a stepdaughter, Patricia Ann of San Diego, Calif.; and two stepgrandchildren, LeighAnn and Kevin.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, O'Connell Chapel, 706 Highway 9, Bayville. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Presbyterian Church of Toms River, 1070 Hooper Ave., Toms River, or to Holisticare Hospice 1415 Hooper Ave., Toms River.
