Alma Madsen was born and raised in Sacramento, California. She grew up in a close knit family with eleven siblings. She was proud of her California heritage as a fourth generation Californian. She loved the variety of ethnic food available and shared this love with her children.
Alma attended school in Sacramento, graduating from McClatchy High School. In Junior High and High School, she took classes through the Sacramento Recreation Department in Dance. She loved Tap and Ballet and then all dance. After graduation from High School, she attended a semester of college at Sacramento City College. She dropped out of college when WWII started and became a typist at Mather Air Force Base.
In 1943, Alma met her husband, Tom, at a U.S.O. Dance. They were married three months later in Hanford, California. Tom and Alma were happily married for 73 years prior to Tom's death. They embraced their family, friends, church and community with an attitude of inclusion for all and a sense of responsibility to make a difference in this world.
Alma moved to Yuba City with Tom and three of their four children, Marion, Janet and Neils, in 1949. Their youngest son, Robert, was born in Yuba City. Immediately they joined the Methodist Church. As their children grew they were active participants in P.T.A, Camp Fire Girls, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Jobs Daughters and the American Field Service. Alma was a strong advocate for providing Social Services through P.T.A for those in need. Alma was an active advocate and participant in developing the first free lunch program at Bridge Street School for students without a lunch and supporting the free immunizations and dental exams held at the school.
Alma was employed by Yuba City Unified School District as a School Cafeteria Manager in the late sixties. Tom and Alma were active members of the Marysville First United Methodist Church, Roseville Rock n Rollers and The National Travelers Campers (N.T.C.). They were avid travelers, wearing out two motor homes over the years.
Alma is survived by her four children and one A.F.S. exchange son from Brazil, eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Kate of Montana, and many nieces and nephews. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and community member.
