David Barfuss Obituary

David LaGrant Barfuss was born June 1, 1938, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Lola Anne Clawson and LaGrant William Barfuss; the second child in a family that would grow to include three sons and two daughters.

In junior high school, his dedication and hard work as an Explorer Scout earned him the opportunity as the only representative from the state of Washington to attend the 8th World Scouting Jamboree in Ontario, Canada. He went on to earn the rank of Eagle Scout remaining active in the Scouting program throughout his life.

In 1958, he accepted the call to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission serving primarily in Pennsylvania and New York. After his return home, he enlisted in the Air Force Reserves where he served for three years. He later earned his private pilot's license and flew friends and family as a cherished hobby.

David attended the University of California Berkley as an undergrad and the University of California San Francisco for Dental School where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in the spring of 1969. During his education, he met and married Margaret Ann Grange of Pocatello, ID. Together they raised two sons and two daughters. Dr. B established his practice in Yuba City, California, where he remained until retiring in 2016.

Always active, David's passions included racquetball, tennis, the accordion, locksmithing, ballroom dancing, acting, and his church and community service. He married Harriet Allen Strange of Yuba City in 1994, and they continued to enjoy their mutual love of travel.

David is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Madeline Louise; brother, Donald Lee (Patricia); and daughter-in-law, Amy Yeager Barfuss.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet; brother, Eugene Harold (Treasure); sister, Beverly Shaffer (Dave); children, Corey David (Michelle), Denise Berry (Dale), Rebecca Hammond (Paul) and Todd Samuel; as well as step-children, Elizabeth Scott and Todd Strange (Courtney). He counts a total of 20 grand and step-grandchildren and 8.5 great-grandchildren as his progeny, leaving dozens of nieces and nephews, in-laws, cousins, patients and life-long friends to remember the great man, dentist, son, brother, father, and friend.

A Memorial to his life will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 520 Clark Ave., Yuba City, beginning with a receiving line from 10:30-11:45 am, followed by the Memorial Service starting at noon.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends a donation in memory of Dr. Barfuss to the organization he served in for 45 years; the California Dental Association Foundation at https://ebusiness.cda.org/ebusiness/fundraising
