Eberhard Baur Obituary

March 31, 1938 - May 24, 2014

Ed Baur, loving husband and father passed away at home after a valiant battle with lung cancer fortunately never having a bad day or giving up hope to the very end, a true testament to his character and personality.

Ed was born in Reutlingen, Germany in 1938, a young boy during World War II. After losing his father in the war, his mother took Ed, his older brother and sister to live at the castle in Pahl where his uncle worked as the caretaker. Ed lived there 10 years until he was 16 with many fond memories he would share over the years. One memory he shared was being asked by his mother to go buy eggs, however money had no value so not wanting to disappoint her, yet still do the right thing, he would take the eggs and leave money on the farmers' fence.

After his mother passed away, when Ed was almost sixteen, his older sister and brother-in-law decided they would move the family to Canada. In 1957 they sailed to Quebec, Canada on the M.S. Arosa Sun where jobs were said to be plentiful but they found this not to be the case. His brother who by this time had made his way to Yuba City sponsored Ed to come to the Yuba Sutter Area in 1959. While in Germany he studied to become a journeyman plumber which opened the door to his first job with Ashley Plumbing and later Frank M. Booth. Ed had studied English while in Germany however he never thought he would need to use it. Little did he know where his future would take him!

He met his devoted wife Janet Livermore, a 3rd generation Californian and they were married in 1960. He always joked and told friends that she married him before he knew how to speak English. As Ed and Janet started their new life together Ed served in the US Army from 1961-1963 and was stationed in Mineral Wells, Texas where he picked up a very unique southern drawl to his already strong German accent. Once back in Yuba City he continued to work as a Plumber and became a US Citizen in 1983. He was very proud to be an American and to have the privilege to vote.

Ed retired from F. M. Booth in 1997 after 30 years as a Plumber/Pipefitter. He was known for his work ethic and determination. Everything was done to perfection and his motto was if you are going to do something, do it right the first time. Many times his fellow co-workers would comment that his work was like a Swiss watch. He loved to garden and spend time in the mountains especially at the family cabin. Weekend drives and camping trips with friends and family were favorites. He enjoyed and was proud of his Bavarian heritage and Sunday mornings were filled with music, singing, and of course yard work. He loved to share his roses, plant gardens and his pool he dug by hand for his family.

He is survived by wife, Janet and two daughters Betina Baur of Chico, Karen Baur of Rocklin, (son-in-law Randy Tate), sister Liselotte "Lilo" Dick of Munich, Germany, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother Siegfried Baur.

The family wishes to thank the many health care providers who over the years honored his strong desire and will to live life to the fullest. Thank you for making this possible we will forever be grateful.

I was privileged to meet Ed and give him a hello hug. I told Janet that Ed was the best hugger I've ever hugged, including my husband. Ed was kind, funny and very welcoming. I know how much he's missed by his wife and children.

Ed was to teach Ca fellows some plumbing tricks and first he had to teach them math. His education in Germany was the equivalent of college level math here. He helped on re-construction of the Rideout Hospital's heart unit and then one scary heart attack he was a patient in the same unit. They said to him: "Did you come back to check on how your work turned out?" Carolyn Livermore Turner sister-in-law

Dear Janet and family: It was a pleasure to work with Ed as my father was born in Dortmund and I understood Ed's drive for perfection. I still tell stories about Ed's method of working in construction as an example to the next generation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the memories will continue.
