Harold McNally Obituary

Harold Steven McNally Jr., 85, passed away peacefully with his son, Joe at his side and daughter Nancy talking in his ear, on January 28, 2016. Hal was born to the late Harold and Jeanette McNally Sr. on September 25, 1930 in Sacramento, CA. He was raised and lived in the Yuba City area all of his life.

He was Class President of Yuba City High School in his senior year, prior to spending the next 4 years at his "beloved" UC Berkeley. "This is where I learned to think!" a phrase often heard from Hal. After returning from college with his wife, Yolanda and baby girl, Susan (Susie) he worked with his father at Triangle Refrigeration, later to become McNally's Appliance. Yolanda, his girlfriend from the age of 12, and Hal raised 5 children Susie, Mikie, Nancy, Steve "Chip" and Joe.

As a young boy he loved exploring the Buttes and visiting with his grandmother, who he referred to as Mam Mam, or Mamgee, on the Powell Ranch in the Sutter Buttes. He developed strong friendships that lasted his lifetime. He would love to share the stories of the "Constipated Worts," his buddies since grammar school. In his younger years, he enjoyed the family campouts at Lake Tahoe and later sailing on Lake Oroville. His love of competition brought out the best in him when it came to the game of golf.

He was a devoted Catholic since the time he was converted to Catholicism in his late twenties along with his wife Yolanda. He was a parishioner at St. Isidore's and became very involved with the Church and Holy Angels School. He served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in the '60s and later in life became very active in other Church activities. Specifically, he loved counting the money (tithes) on Mondays with the church ladies. He regaled everyone with his stories of life often. He was a business man his entire life and prided himself on carrying the family business to success. He prided himself on his good looks after an older classmate made this remark well after he turned 80. He continued to sell up until the end, and was constantly trying to sell refrigerators to the staff at the Gardens, prior to his death. He was best known for his television ads and "Honest Values or my names not Hal McNally!" while giving the finger nod of approval.

He is preceded in death by his wives, Yolanda, Ann, and Cecilia and his oldest son, Steve (Chip). He is survived by his children, Susie Kanewske living on Whidbey Island, Mikie (Gary) Brackbill from Yuba City, Nancy McNally, Whidbey Island and Joe (Carolyn) McNally from Yuba City, his grandsons, Matt and Colin Kanewske, Ryan and Cole McNally and Chris Brackbill. His great grandchildren Evan McNally and Ava Brackbill and soon to be Baby Girl Kanewske. His sisters, Betty (Norm) Duckworth, Salinas, CA and Mary (Doug) Lawrence, Visalia CA and his many nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be Tuesday, February 2nd from 4-7 at Ullrey's Funeral Home. Catholic rosary will be at St. Isidores at 11am on Wednesday, February 3rd followed by a Formal Mass and Burial at 11:30. He will be buried at Sutter Cemetery next to his wives, Yolanda and Cecilia. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be sent to the FSH Society -(facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy) 450 Bedford Street Lexington, MA 02420. (www.fshsociety.org) or, Rideout Hospice 939 Live Oak Blvd, Yuba City, 95991 (www.frhg.org)

I met Hal at Sweetwater Creek Farm on Whidbey Island. Fond memories of him watching out Nancy's window while I was riding on the lawn mower. And I shared lots of great dinners with Hal, even burnt (smoked) chicken. My love goes out to his family.

We loved Hal, and always enjoyed his visits to Sweetwater Creek Farm on Whidbey Island. We shared many great laughs and story telling times together. "Helen's Beans" was one of the funniest we shared. We send our love to his family. Hal was our "adopted Dad" here on the farm and "The Kelly's" will certainly miss him and his great smile.

Nancy McNally ... My sympathy to you and your family at this time.
You probably dont remember me but your name is a big part of the memory
I have from Holy Angels school.
We were in second and third grade together back in 1964-65
I didnt speak English at that time as I had just come from Europe and you were the kindest friend always helping me.
The obituary says that your father left while you spoke in his ear. I find that so wonderful knowing that you were there for him.I just wanted you to know that many people will be at your side but know that there is also another one from the past thinking of you although we completely lost track of each other.
By the way...my Papa always said your Papa always sold the best refrigerators!
