USAF (ret)

Lt. Colonel Gary Lee Coleman, USAF (ret), 78, passed away at his residence in Yuba City after a battle with amyloidosis. Gary was born on March 7, 1934, in Seattle, Washington, to Helen and Wilbur Coleman.

Gary attended the University of Washington where he received a BA in Business and was a member of the golf team for four years and in ROTC. After graduating from the University of Washington in 1956, Gary joined the Air Force. While in the Air Force, Gary flew as a radar navigator for the B-47 and B-52 and in 1967 went on to fly the SR-71 at Beale Air Force Base. In 1974, Gary, was recognized for flying the greatest number of operational missions in the SR-71.

Throughout his 28 year career in the Air Force, Gary received numerous awards and commendations, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. Gary was a member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and Sons of Retirement.

In 1984, Gary retired from the Air Force and began his retirement years. Gary continued to play golf and was a former member of Plumas Lake Golf Course, but his passion was spending time with his wife, Lucille Coleman, his children, Sue Coleman-Snyder (Richard Snyder), Kay Coleman, Cindy Coleman, and Doug Coleman (Sara Coleman), and his grandchildren, Mallorie, Nicholas, Blake, Taylor, Erik, Dane, Sam, and Emma. He spent many of his days enjoying golfing with friends, fishing, working outside, and taking great pride in his grandchildren. He was often seen with his faithful and constant companion, his dog, Honey Bun.

Gary was preceded in death by his infant son, Gary Lee Coleman Junior, his father, Wilbur Coleman, and his mother, Helen Coleman-Dawson.

A memorial service is planned for 11:00 am Friday, April 27, 2011 at St. Isidore Catholic Church located at 222 Clark Avenue, Yuba City. There will be a "Celebration of Life" to follow at Ruthy's located across from the church in the Hillcrest Plaza.

The burial will be held on Tuesday, May 1st at 1:30 at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA.

Arrangements under the direction of Lakeside Colonial Chapel in Marysville.
