Norman Haynes Obituary

February 25, 1930 to April 16, 2025

He was called Dwayne or Norman. Dwayne was born in Sutter, CA, at home. His parents were Norman Edwin "Ed" Haynes Jr. and Hazel Amy Close.

Dwayne's father, Ed, worked for Sutter Co. Water Resources, so the family moved a lot during his childhood, living in or near different pumping plants around the county.

Dwayne graduated from Yuba City Union H.S. in 1947, Yuba City College in 1954, and University of Oregon in 1957.

He met and married Jacqueline "Jackie" Jones. Jackie came with a ready made family of two girls, Teresa and Julie. They welcomed Norman Dwayne Jr. in 1957, and Leslie Ellen in 1958.

While at University of Oregon, he joined U.S. Air Force Reserves, which he entered as a commissioned officer. Dwayne worked at Mather, Hamilton Travis and McClellan AFBs.

Dwayne retired as a Major with the civilian title of Executive Officer, working closely with the 65th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, he had top secret clearance.

Dad was a man with many hats and jobs during his career, which they highlighted at his retirement party in supplying him with approximately 15 serious and comical hats.

Dwayne and Jackie divorced in 1972. In 1974, he met and married Grace Kit Yee. Grace had a daughter, Francine, in Hong Kong, which they brought to the U.S.A. a year later.

Dwayne had many activities he loved, such as camping, fishing, rock hopping, pulling pranks on all the kids, gardening, "Y" Indian Guides, gold panning, softball, tennis, and bowling for the most part.

After retirement, he split his time between Sacramento, CA, and Sutter, CA. He continued to stay very active. He bowled on teams in both locations until 5 years ago.

He had interests in genealogy and history, sharing it with many others. He belonged to Native Sons of the Golden West, Sons in Retirement, and American Legion.

He was an avid fan of any local baseball or football teams in Sacramento, CA, or in Yuba City, CA.

Dwayne leaves behind his daughters, Teresa, Julie, in Yuba City, CA, and Leslie in Spokane, WA; a brother, Russell (Betty) Haynes in Roundup, MT; nine grandkids; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a niece; a nephew; and numerous cousins.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Paula (Morehead) Haynes; Hazel and Harold Cleveland; brothers, Rolly Haynes and Larry Haynes; sister, Clara Haynes; nieces, Tammy Haynes Spence, Jacqueline "Jackie" Jones Haynes, Grace Kit Haynes, and Francine Berg; and son, Norman Dwayne Haynes Jr.

We will have a simple Celebration of Life at the Native Daughters Hallm 7393 Lyons St., Sutter, CA, on Sunday, May 4, 2025, 1:30 PM.

I joined the AF Reserves at age 17, in 1967. The 31st Aeromedical Sq transferred from flying propeller cargo planes at McClellan to become the 65th. Sq at Travis AFB. Captain then Major Haynes was my commanding officer. He frequently would call me while I attended UC Berkeley, to see if I would be willing to fly on a week-end to Hickam AFB, Honolulu. I always respected him for being honest, upfront, patriotic, what you see - is what you get kind of person. My sincere condolences on your family great loss. Ted Nishio

Lu and I were very sad to learn of Norm's passing. Ironically, she and I were just speaking of him this past weekend and the kindness he showed the then "Amn Toth" when she was loaned to 4th AF from the 940th. Had that not have happened, it's likely that she and I would not have met and later married.
Norm was always a font of knowledge, a get it done guy, and a great softball buddy (which was a good thing as I was crappy at tennis and golf!) After we moved the NAF back to March ARB, we stayed in touch. Lu and I hope those who attend Norm's celebration of life this weekend spend the time telling great Stormin' Norman stories. There are certainly enough great ones to fill an encyclopedia! May our brother rest in peace and the Good Lord bring comfort to his family and friends. Deke and Lu DeCubellis
