Thomas McDearmid Obituary

July 28, 1946 -
December 13, 2024

Thomas S. McDearmind a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and accomplished superintendent in the commercial construction industry passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, at the age of 78.

Born on July 28, 1946, Thomas lived a life of hard work, passion, and love leaving behind a legacy of strength, laughter and dedication. ~Thomas spent his career specializing in the construction of hospitals in the greater Sacramento area. Among his proudest accomplishments was his involvement in buliding the Sutter Medical Center - Anderson Lucchetti Women's & Children's Center, where his grandson Nolan was born in 2016.

Thomas shared 51 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Cathy McDearmind, creating a home filled with love and laughter. Together they raised two sons Tom and Michael who carry forward the values their father instilled in them. He was a proud grandfather to Nolan who brought boundless joy to his life. He is also survived by his sister, Mary McDearmind an avid golfer and cherished family member.

Tom was born in Yuba City, CA, and attended local schools through his junior year at Yuba City High School. His father moved the family to the Sacramento area in the summer of 1963.

After graduating high school, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion that is assigned to a Marine Corps Division that ventures ahead of our troops to construct bivwacks for them in the GOD FARSAKEN insect and retile infested swamps and jungles of Vietnam. Due to our government's decision to eradicate the food cource of the North Vietnamese soldiers by spraying what is known as Agent Orange on their crops, Tom, like thousands and thousands of our troops was exposed to that chemical which was later found to be extremely toxic to humans.

For 55 years of civilian life, Tom gallantly battled the aftereffects of Agent Orange and was under constant care of the Veterans Administration Medical team.

In December of 2024, his body could no longer continue to fight back, and he lost the battle like so many others. RIP our dear friend, and THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!! Karen, Peggy, Carl and Dallas.

Thomas's life will be Interment at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025.

Gerry and I and Tom and Cathy were lucky enough to renew our friendship that started with Gerry and Tom when they were teenagers. Many years passed in between while we pursued our lives but the fun that we had in these last few years was pretty much unchanged from before. Maybe a little tamer. A great couple that added to our lives.
