Sallie Hinds Obituary

SALLIE HINDS Sallie (Chirscaden) Hinds passed away on November 2, 2025. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on June 8, 1930, to Alex and Elsie (Letourneau) Chriscaden. She grew up in Saginaw, graduating from Arthur Hill High School in 1948, and attended MacMurray College in Illinois. Some additional studies were done at Michigan State University. While in Saginaw, she was employed at the Lufkin Rule Company, leaving that position for San Diego, California, to join her husband Jim, serving in the Navy. At his discharge in 1954, they returned to Saginaw, where she found employment at WKNX-TV as Traffic Manager and commercial model. After seven years, she left TV to become a stay-at-home wife and mother, raising two daughters. In 1978, the family moved to Point Lookout, north of AuGres, where she spent most of her childhood summers. While living there, she became an active member of the Arenac County Historical Society, serving as volunteer hostess and President of the Society. She later became a lifetime member. Along with husband Jim, she joined the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, serving as Public Relations Director and Instructor. With three other members, they traveled to all area schools teaching water safety. In 1980, Sallie was elected by the voters to the position of Sims Township Treasurer, where she held the position for twelve years. She had many interests and talents. Sallie loved sketching, needlework, and writing, producing six small volumes of poetry and receiving many awards for her work. She became a lifetime member of the International Society of Poets and other poetry organizations. Sallie was named Michigan's Senior Poet Laureate six times and was also accepted to the Poet Fellowship in London, England. Her poetry traveled around the world. Sallie participated in many pageants where she was named the Beauties of America Mrs. Michigan in 1988 and again in 1990. One of her proudest awards was the title Mrs. Scottish National Achievement, representing her Scottish heritage. In 1992, Sallie and her husband moved to East Tawas, Michigan. While there, she served on the city council and was later appointed to the East Tawas Planning Commission, serving fourteen years. She also enjoyed volunteering at Tawas St. Joseph Hospital for many years. Sallie was a member of the GFWC Ladies Literary Club, serving as treasurer and northeast district treasurer. That club is now the Tawas Area Women's Club, where she held membership for several years. In 2007, Sallie and her husband returned to the AuGres area, making their home on the 10th fairway of the Huron Breeze Golf Course. She was appointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals by the Sims Township Board. Sallie is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Northeast Michigan Arts Council. The NEMAC logo was designed by Sallie. She is survived by 2 daughters, Amy (Dan) McLean, Jennifer (David) Wanner, one Granddaughter, Alexis (James) Irwin, and two great-grandchildren, Ashton James and Izobel Bain Irwin. Sallie is preceded in death by her husband, James. As per her request, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, funeral, or memorial service. Those wishing to send remembrance may do so to Arenac County Historical Society, AuGres, Northeast Michigan Arts Council, Standish, or Arthritis Foundation. Her family would like to thank everyone at Lakeview Manor in Tawas for their great care and compassion, and also Compassus Hospice for their love and support and expert care.
