Patricia Fargen
Flandreau-Mary Patricia Fargen, 92, of Flandreau, died November 19, 2015, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Patricia, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Sullivan) Quinn, was born September 24, 1923, and spent her early years in rural Beresford. She received her education in Woonsocket and Egan, graduating from Flandreau High School in 1941. She graduated from General Beadle Teacher's College in Madison and taught for five years in Moody County country schools until her marriage to Lawrence Fargen on June 8, 1948. She loved life on the farm and enjoyed growing her vegetable and flower gardens, cooking, and canning. One of her many gifts was bringing her signature applesauce to every gathering. She was a talented seamstress, spending much of her time sewing clothing as well as making special quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a fan of the music of Lawrence Welk and Guy Lombardo and, in her later years, enjoyed reading extensively and following current events. Ever the Homecoming Queen, one of her true joys in life was connecting with people. She continued her lifelong passion for journaling and written correspondence, frequently sending letters to friends and family and ensuring a birthday card always arrived on the special day. Patricia was a longtime active member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church and Altar Society. Following Lawrence's death on November 25, 1975, Patricia continued farming until she moved to Flandreau in January of 1990.
Grateful to have shared her life are her five children, Sheila Fargen Hurley (Brian Hurley), of Sioux Falls, and their children Meghan Hurley Gibbs (Ted Gibbs) and three great-grandchildren, Mary Shea, Crowley, and Edmund Gibbs, of Oak Park, Illinois, Caitlin Hurley (special friend Andy Goetzinger), and Bridgid Hurley, of Sioux Falls; son Jim (Pam) Fargen, deceased November 18, 2015, and their children Brennan (Jennifer) Fargen, Ashley Fargen, and Devin Fargen (fiancé Austin Kolar), all of Sioux Falls; daughter Joan Fargen Holm (Allen Holm) and their children Mackenzie Holm (steady friend Keaton Moffitt) and Evan Holm, all of Sioux Falls; son Bill (Vickie) Fargen and their children Julia Fargen and Quinn Fargen, all of Elkton; and son Greg (Lora) Fargen, of Brookings, and their children Ryan Fargen, of Lawrence, Kansas, and Kelli (Johnny) Olson, of Fairmont, Minnesota. She was also survived by two sisters-in-law, Anita Holdridge of Astoria, Oregon, and Paula Fargen of Louisville, Kentucky, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Lawrence, son Jim, infant son, sisters Margaret Weber, Rita Scofield, Mary Gale, Irene Determan, and two brothers, Emmett and Edward Quinn.
