Richard Tschetter Obituary

Richard J. Tschetter

Bridgewater - Richard James Tschetter, age 80, of Bridgewater, had a peaceful passing January 7, 2019 at the Sanford Hospice Cottages. Funeral services will be held on Thursday January 10th at 11:00 am at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Marion, SD. Visitation will be held from 10am - 11:00 am at the church before services.

Richard was born on March 25th, 1938 to John M. Tschetter and Louise (Forsch) Tschetter on his homestead in Bridgewater. On August 31, 1958 he married Joann Stinson in Vivian, SD. Four children were born to the couple, Ryan (Sheryl) Tschetter of Bluffton, SC, Mary Cheney of Eden Prairie, MN, Sotera (Isabel) Tschetter of St.Paul, MN and Tonia (Monte) Hoggarth of Bismarck, ND.

Richard was an educator and coach in Niobrara NB, Frazee MN, Emery SD, and Freeman SD. He taught chemistry, algebra, advanced algebra, history and driver's training. He returned to the farm in Bridgewater and raised his family on a dairy farm. He served on the Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA), was president of the SD State Board of Education and served on the Bridgewater Township Board. He was an active board member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bridgewater and eventually joined Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Marion.

Rich lived a full and well-rounded life that was both spiritual and sports loving, filled with activities that included boxing, motorcycle racing, refereeing and attending athletic events. His hobbies were wood and metal working. After retirement he spent his time visiting family, participating in church activities and being a caregiver to his wife Joann.

As a member of the community he was always known for his cheerful attitude, passion for education, fairness, and the belief of doing not what was easy, but what was right. He instilled this in his children and surrounded himself with like-minded people. Rich's warm smile and thoughtful conversation will be missed by his family, friends and the many people he encountered in his life who started out strangers and left being friends.

He is survived by wife Joann, brother Melvin (Arley Jean), special friend Rose Larson, four children, five grandchildren JJ (Randy) Rusche, Max Tschetter, Austin Hoggarth, Brady Hoggarth, and Ashley Cheney.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Backpack Program 4710 North Westport Ave Sioux Falls, SD 57501, in memory of Richard J. Tschetter.

Tschetter family , we will always remember all of the contributions and time Rich and family put in at the Presbyterian Church in Bridgewater and at Marion as well. On a personal note I visited Rich and the girls at hospice several times and we had the greatest time visiting and Rich told some great stories and had a sharp sense of humor. That's how i will remember him. Rest in peace Rich . Dan and Sandy Rinehart

RICHIE was one of the good guys. He reminded me that our brothers were classmates and friends and we should be, too. He was always there; for friends and later for his wife. My sympathy to all. Janet Potter Tiede.
