Selma Preheim
Selma Preheim, 101, of Freeman passed away Sunday, Oct. 5th at the Oakview Terrace in Freeman. Memorial Services will be held on Sat., Oct 18th at 10:30 am at the Salem Mennonite (South) Church of rural Freeman. Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 17th beginning at 4 pm with the family present from 6-8 pm at the Walter Funeral Home in Freeman.
Selma was born December 28, 1912, the sixth child of Peter P. and Mary Kaufman Schrag at rural Marion, SD.
She was baptized in 1928 and joined Salem Zion Mennonite Church. In 1931 she graduated from Marion High School.
Selma earned a teaching degree from Freeman Jr. College. She taught in the one-room rural schools of the 1930s for three years. She loved teaching and always remembered her students from that time. For many years she enjoyed teaching Sunday School for three-year olds to adult.
On May 8, 1935 she was united in marriage to Felix W. Preheim at Salem Mennonite Church. They were blessed with four children, Shirley, Pat, Randy and Collette. Felix and Selma farmed in the Marion area for many years before retiring to Freeman in 1983. They were married 57 years when Felix passed away in 1992.
Selma had many interests. She loved music and especially enjoyed playing her organ. She also enjoyed poetry, gardening, making quilts and playing Rummikub. She had many collections that were interesting to her grandchildren and all who came to visit her.
Selma entered the Salem Home in 2009 and Oakview Terrace in April, 2014.
Her greatest joy was her family and the time she spent with them.
She leaves to cherish her memory, four children Shirley and Delmer Hofer, Freeman, SD; Pat and Curt Olson, Sioux Falls, SD; Randy and Brenda Preheim, Conroe, TX; Collette and Don Carlson, Salem, SD. Ten grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren: Brent and Nancy Hofer, Katie, Alex, Scott, Emily of Scranton, IA; Char Hofer and Shannon of Sioux Falls; Kevin and Angie Olson, Greg, Claire and Anna of Edmond, OK; Craig and Jocelyn Olson, Leni and Levi of Sioux Falls, SD; Paige and Dave Wain, Mckenna and Jack of Albertville, MN; Lynley and Jimmy McDonald, Jordon and Rebecca, Blake and Amy, Laura of Spring, TX; Lesley and Terry Groves, Ryan of Cincinatti, OH; Mike and Joann Schock, Jon, Marah, Mandi, Sadie of Spencer, SD; Brad and Desiree Schock, Alexis, Addisyn, Hannah, Zane of Salem, SD; Jenni and Jeff Heumiller, Hailey and Sydney of Salem, SD; Rachel Sayler and Renae Carlson, Sioux Falls, SD, and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers, Ben, Otto, Lloyd and Lee and three sisters, Julia Kleinsasser, Luella Berg and Minnie Deckert, her husband, Felix and son-in-law, Merlin Schock.
