Thomas Ralph Scheurenbrand was born in Mitchell on October 23, 1941 to William (Bill) and Irma (Carlson) Scheurenbrand. He attended Mitchell Public Schools, graduating from Mitchell High School in 1959. He spent a year in Rockford, IL working after high school before returning to Mitchell to begin his career in Sheet Metal as an apprentice at Tessier's, Inc. That was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army in 1964, doing a tour of duty as a cryptographer in Germany. He was discharged on April 17, 1966 and returned to Mitchell to continue his apprenticeship. He became a Journeyman, spending his entire career as a Union Sheet Metal Worker. He retired in 2004 at age 63, after working over 40 years in his trade.
On March 3, 1967, he married Margie Schroeder at First United Methodist Church in Mitchell where they lived and raised their four children. In 1990, Marge's brother, Don along with Tom and his construction friends, built them a new home in the country development of Hartford Heights, 3 miles east of Hartford, SD, where they resided until March, 2014. Since then they have lived in Tom's childhood home in Mitchell, always occupied by Scheurenbrands after being built by his grandfather in the late 1800s. He was very proud of his family, of being a Veteran and of his work in his trade, spending the last few years working for Krier & Blain Heating and Air Conditioning, Sioux Falls, as a foreman on many commercial jobs, including large jobs such as the main US Post Office and Eastside Walmart in Sioux Falls where the building was so huge, they had to set the rooftop units with a helicopter. He was loved and respected by his many friends in construction, known to be tough and hardworking, but also having lots of fun.
Tom was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell, a 50-year member of the American Legion and a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #10. His love of fishing was fostered by the annual Father's Day event on the Missouri River, where he spent many enjoyable days with his sheet metal friends who called him "Tommy" & more importantly, with his sons. His children called him by many names… Pops, Papa, Daddy, Dad and sometimes Tommy. He loved being "Grandpa" to his grandchildren. Tom enjoyed reading western books, watching the Encore Western TV channel, visits from friends and going to the movies with Marge.
Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Margie; sons: Todd (Christeen) Scheurenbrand, Mitchell, SD, Wade (Amy) Scheurenbrand, Sioux Falls, SD; twin daughters: Stephani Scheurenbrand, Omaha, NE, and Suzanne (Kurt) Lyman, Dakota Dunes, SD; one brother, Ron (Charlene) Scheurenbrand, Kailua, HI, and one sister, Barbara Pitts, Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren: Zach Scheurenbrand, Phoenix, AZ, Megan and Anna Scheurenbrand, Mitchell, Tommy, Grady & Riley Lyman, Dakota Dunes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Gary Scheurenbrand and Don Scheurenbrand and two grandchildren, Isak Thomas Scheurenbrand and Stephani Margaret Lyman.
