Vernon Tieszen Obituary

Dr. Vernon J. Tieszen

Dr. Vernon J. Tieszen, 88, of Marion, SD, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at the Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion. Funeral services will be at 10:30am Monday, May 23, 2016 at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Marion with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Marion. Visitation with family present will begin at 5:00pm Sunday at the church with a Prayer Service and Masonic Service at 7:00pm Sunday evening at the church. Arrangements by Hofmeister Jones Funeral Home.

Vernon was born on February 18, 1928, to Joseph and Jennie (Janssen) Tieszen in Chicago, Illinois.

After graduating high school from Marion High, Vernon attended National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, Illinois. Upon his graduation from college, he returned home and practiced with his father, uncles and later with his cousins in the Tieszen Chiropractic Clinic from 1950-1993. He was a member of South Dakota Chiropractic Association and received the Golden Service Award in 1987 in recognition of long-standing service to humanity through his profession and was recognized again in 2009 for 50 years of service to the chiropractic profession and community.

He married Arlene Spomer on February 17, 1957, and shared his life with her for the past 59 years. They were blessed with four special daughters - Louann, Lisa, Lynette, and Lorelei. He was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Marion. Vernon was active in many organizations, including Commercial Club, Lions Club, a fireman and fire chief. He was a school board member, was a coach for Jr. Baseball, and was a long-time member of the Masons. Vernon loved being outdoors and loved nature. That love gave him a passion for yard work and many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, boating and camping with his family and friends; he especially loved having a dog by his side.

One of Vernon's favorite things was listening to a good story or joke from a friend or patient and then sharing that same story or joke with others. Some of these jokes he told over and over and over again. "Say, have you heard the one about............."

Dr. Vernon Joseph Tieszen, 88, of Marion, died May 18, 2016 at Tieszen Memorial Nursing Home. He is proceeded in death by his parents and brother, Arden "Jim". He is survived by his loving wife, Arlene, daughters, Louann (Greg) Weaver, Lisa (Brian) Ketcham, Lynette Tieszen, and Lorelei (Michael) Thompson, and grandchildren, Scott, Myles, and Nicole Weaver; Lindsay (Dustin) Patt, Nicholas, and Bailey Ketcham; Colin, Erin, and Ganin Thompson; very special friends, Larry and Lori Kippes and family, and many other deeply loved relatives and friends.

Dad will be greatly missed. He will be remembered for countless things but mostly for his beautiful and selfless love for his family and friends and the healing touch he had with his hands. God blessed him and, in turn, he was a blessing to all of us.
