Rheta Maccombs Obituary

The Plains Rheta (Brooks) Maccombs, 91, of The Plains, Ohio, passed away at her residence on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 8, 1934, in Logan Ohio, the daughter of the late Charles and Mabel (McManaway) Brooks.

Rheta was a 1952 graduate of Logan High School. After raising her children, she was employed at Athens High School in the Language Lab.

She was a devoted member of The Plains United Methodist Church and a life member of Athens Eastern Star, Chapter #175. Rheta enjoyed "armchair coaching" her favorite teams, including the Cincinnati Bengals, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Ohio University Bobcats. She traveled to 46 states with Jan's Fans to cheer on the Ohio University basketball team, where she formed many lifelong friendships.

She generously volunteered her time with the local Blood Bank and delivered bread as part of an outreach ministry through The Plains United Methodist Church, always finding ways to serve others in her community.

Rheta will always be remembered for her enthusiasm for life and her deep love for her family. She always had a treat ready for those she loved, and the Hallmark Channel was often the only television channel playing in her home.

She is survived by her children, Becky (Gary) McVey of The Plains, Beth (Mike) Powers of Logan, Paul Maccombs II of Guysville, and Steve (Barb) Maccombs of Lebanon; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren, who were all her pride and joy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Maccombs; her daughter, Beverly (Jerry) Greenbaum; her granddaughter, Heather McVey (William) Erlich; and her brothers, James R. Brooks, Daniel (Jeannie) Brooks, and Charles (Katie) Brooks.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, 24 Morris Avenue, Athens, Ohio 45701. Athens Chapter 175 OES will hold services Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026, at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, with Pastor David Roach officiating. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nelsonville, Ohio.
