Crow Swimsaway Obituary

Crow Swimsaway (BA, MA University of Chicago; PhD London School of Economics), the Athens area's "friendly neighborhood shaman," flew from this world at age 81 on April 7th after a battle with lung disease.
If you didn't know Crow personally, someone you know did!
Crow was an anthropologist, metaphysician and healer, an activist, artist and author, an educator, master gardener, herbalist and chef. He was a citizen of the world who loved food, drink, animals, people, nature, travel, and good times of any sort.
Crow's anthropological work with the indigenous people of Taiwan and on war and human aggression (under the name of Martin Anderson Nettleship) remain cited and relevant to this day. His books as Crow Swimsaway are available on Amazon.
Crow was involved with the Athens' community as the owner and artist of Hand Eye Jewels and Crow Tattoos, and with Bekki Shining Bearheart he ran The Church of Earth Healing, Horsefeathers, and tended to the land at Dragon Waters. He raised his daughter Maia here through her graduation from Ohio University.
We invite you to celebrate Crow's life and loves with the beauty of nature, community, food, drink, music and remembrances. The good times start at 5pm on June 23rd ten miles south of Athens at one of Crow's special places. A mezze platter from Salaam and pulled pork from Lake Hope Lodge will be served following the memorial! Feel free to bring special food or beverages in celebration. Please visit https://www.facebook.com/events/354693255054244/ for directions. RSVP on Facebook, or to [email protected] if possible, but drop-ins are also welcome.
The outdoor venue will have tents and folding chairs, but bring anything you like to keep you comfortable (sunscreen, water, bug spray, camp chairs, blankets...). The site is handicap-accessible, parking is ample, and the party goes on whatever the weather.

During their help in the blessing of the drum I acquired at WaWa Ont at the suggestion of my friend Michael Wiggins in Troy, MI some years back, I was transported back to the Keweenaw, Eagle River. Hope to see Crow the next time I'm up there. Thanks Crow, Becky.

The first time I ever saw Crow was when he was in a drumming circle on the small green across from the College Gate, about 1986. I knew Crow as a gentle and creative man and enjoyed originally helping with his public access show, and then enjoying watching the return of his show on Public Access in later years. He once gifted me with his book "Circle of the Ancestors," published in the UK. I will miss running into him in the Athens Public Library. I extend sympathy to his family.
