Arline SLACK Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

SLACK, Arline Arline Taylor Slack Arline Taylor Slack, age 94, of Decatur, GA passed away peacefully on November 16, 2013. The daughter of Lou P. Taylor and Ruth Gordon Taylor, and the widow of Searcy B. Slack, Jr., she was born in Atlanta, and graduated from Druid Hills High School in 1935 and Emory University in 1939. She also attended Wesleyan College. Her siblings pre-deceased her: Lucille Taylor Crenshaw, Frederick Taylor, and Marion Taylor, Ph.D. Survivors include children Gordon (Annie) Slack of Colorado; Bill (Pat) Slack of LaFayette GA; Virginia Slack of Atlanta; Henry (Ellen) Slack of Decatur; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and thirteen nieces and nephews. Mrs. Slack joined and founded several groups and then never let go. She joined the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club in 1946, the Decatur Book Lovers Club in 1949, and helped to found North Decatur Presbyterian Church in 1955. She served as a volunteer Camp Fire Girls leader and committee member, worked as a bookkeeper at Southern Neon Displays, and later assisted the Initiative for Affordable Housing. She was also a great traveler, first with the Friendship Force, and then on trips with her husband to many national parks. After his passing, she traveled to Chile, China, Holland, Alaska, Mexico, Denmark, and God only knows where else. She had great interest in genealogy of both the Taylor and Slack families, was a member of the Holt Family Association and Clan Ferguson, and attended Slack family reunions at the beach as long as she was able. Her body was donated to Emory School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 23, 4 pm, at North Decatur Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow. The family appreciates the loving care provided by the staff of Sunrise of Decatur for her last years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Healing Waters Foundation (healingwatersfoundation.org), 1632-B Big Thomson Avenue, Estes Park CO 80517; or to North Decatur Presbyterian Church (ndpc.org), 611 Medlock Road, Decatur GA 30033.

Slack/Taylor family, I am thinking of you as you grieve. I enjoyed meeting Arline and so many of you at Marion's service and having you all visit the old family house. Unfortunately, I will be away this weekend. May she rest in peace! N. Baxter
