Candler LASSETER Obituary

LASSETER, Jr., Candler Candler P. Lasseter, Jr. Mr. Candler Percy Lasseter, Jr., died peacefully at home early in the morning of January 23, 2014. He was born on June 9, 1920, in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta, to Candler Percy, Sr. and Tommie Poole Lasseter. He married the love of his life, Joyce Reid Lasseter, on October 1, 1948. They happily celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last October. Candler attended Tech High School (now Grady) in Atlanta and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He loved Atlanta and had many happy memories of working as a child in his father's grocery stores, including a grocery at the corner of 10th and Peachtree Streets. It was from that store that he remembered delivering groceries to the residence that is now the Margaret Mitchell house. He lived his entire life in his hometown of Atlanta (and, later, DeKalb County), Georgia. After discharge from the Army, he attended Georgia State University where he earned a Bachelor's of Business Administration. While a working, older student, he earned membership in Beta Gamma Sigma and graduated with honors at the top of his class. He was hired by Life of Georgia in 1957 and retired from there as a Group Representative in 1986. During those years he traveled the southeast, much of the time in a Volkswagon Beetle. In addition to his wife, Candler loved his family and friends, Georgia Tech football, his church community at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, travel with family and friends, jazz, good food and Snickers. Up until the last few years, he was a long-time volunteer with Toco Hills Community Ministry and the Tech High Alumni Association, where he served as treasurer until 2012. Candler is survived by his wife, Joyce Reid Lasseter; his daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Vann Angel of Cave Spring, GA; grandchildren, Beth and Eric Angel; granddaughter; Alyssa Lasseter; grandson and his wife Tom and Megan Stack Lasseter; forever and beloved daughter-in-law, Francie James Lasseter, and son, Steve Lasseter. He was a very proud and happy great-grandfather of Max Kenneth and Patrick Candler Lasseter. Candler is also survived by his sister, Laurie Mendel, and nieces and nephews. Candler was a kind, loyal and faithful man; he loved and was loved by many and will be missed. His burial service will be held on Saturday, February 8, at 11am at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Friends are invited to join the family at a reception in the Parish Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the St. Bartholomew's Endowment Fund, 1790 Lavista Road, Atlanta, GA 30329. A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.

Dear Joyce,
I was saddened to learn of Candler's passing. Although we hadn't talked for some time, i have warm memories of Candler's visits with Mama and Daddy when he had occasion to be in Florida. His kindness throughout their lives and when each of them passed away will never be forgotten. Together, you and Candler have succeeded in a great life's mission - you have made a difference in the many lives that you have touched.

Joyce,

We can only begin to imagine how much Candler will be missed. We thank God for his presence in your life and, as well, we thank God for Candler and you for being such constant good friends to my mother through times both happy and sad. She too will miss him terribly as she talks often of both of you fondly.

We know he is now in the arms of Christ where, with grace, we will all someday be and so look forward to seeing Candler again.

Love, Steve & Miss C Holland
