Carson Elliott Obituary
ELLIOTT, Carson
We mourn the death of Carson Elliott, who died on November 1, 2025, after a lengthy illness. Carson was surrounded by her immediate family in Wilmington, NC, when she passed peacefully. Carson was born Agnes Carson Brown on Monmouth Plantation in Natchez, Mississippi to Joseph Eckford Brown, a US District Attorney, and Agnes Carson Brown. Young Carson was a noted figure in Natchez, where she was Audubon Master and then crowned Queen of the Pilgrimage in 1958, both high honors.
After attending Sophie Newcombe, Carson went on Hollins College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and was an active member of her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. While travelling on the Queen Mary, she met John Howard Candler Jr., and they were married in great ceremony at Stanton Hall in Natchez in 1958. They moved to Mr. Candler's hometown of Atlanta Georgia, and had three girls; Agnes, Leighton and Brandon. Carson was active in Atlanta with The Forward Arts Foundation, Junior League, and the Peachtree Garden Club.
In 1991, Carson married Herbert Elliott, of Augusta, Georgia, who was the love of her life. Carson was welcomed into Herbert's family by his daughters, Corinne and Adrienne and stepchildren, William S Stuckey III (Catherine), and Stuart Anne Stuckey. Carson spent her happiest years in Augusta until Herbert's untimely passing 6 years ago in 2019. While Carson never fully recovered after Herbert's death, she had a wonderful new chapter in life with her daughter, Brandon, adored son in-law, Tom Tully, and grandchildren, Conard and Hughes who moved her to Wilmington, North Carolina to be closer to family.
Carson is survived by her daughter, Leighton Carson Candler, of New York, Southampton and Palm Beach, and Brandon Candler Tully (Tom); and beloved grandchildren, Conard Hay Henderson, US Army, and Hughes Candler Henderson. Additional survivors include two stepdaughters, Corinne Holman Elliott, Adrienne Eischeid Elliott Eischeid (Todd); and step-grandchildren, Elliott Wanninger Eischeid and Frances Holman Eischeid.
Carson was well known in Augusta as the author of two books on etiquette, a radio show and the "Ask Carson" weekly column in the Augusta Chronicle. Her Etiquette business, "The Proper Thing," focused on societal manners and corporate etiquette. Carson was quick to correct any infraction, but also had the ability to laugh at herself. One of the greatest gifts Carson gave to those who knew her were the many stories where she was either the narrator or, more often, main character. Carson was very involved in Alcoholics Anonymous and spent more than 40 years lending her advice and support to her friends in AA. She was one of a kind and will be missed by many. Perhaps her greatest love other than family were her animals, Chester, Chappy James and Spook the cat.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Carson's devoted care team of Monica Galloway, Sparkle Law, Ramona Fredrick, Cathleen Gore and Jasmine Smith. This team of angels provided exceptional care for Carson during the last years of her life.
Services will be at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Augusta, Georgia on December 1, 2025 at 1:00 PM, with reception to follow.
