Charles COMMINS Obituary

Although Charles Emory Commins was born in South Carolina in 1924, he moved to Atlanta as a child and always considered it home. After graduating from Atlanta Boys' High in 1943, he served with distinction in the US Army Infantry in the European theater in 1943-1945, earning the Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Star among other honors. The French ambassador presented Charles with the French Legion of Honor medal for his meritorious service to France during the Normandy invasion in 1944. Following his military service, Charles attended and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He worked as a textile engineer for many years, first at the National Cotton Council and later with Fulton Cotton Mills. He enjoyed a second career and retired from the security department with the Coca-Cola Company. While visiting Emory University Hospital in 1952, Charles fell in love with a beautiful nurse named Claire Sargis, whom he married in 1953. They adored each other throughout their 64-year marriage. The couple was blessed with one devoted son, Drew, and his loving wife Karen. At the age of 93, Charles passed peacefully on 10 October 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Charles's memory to the Emory University Hospital fund at this link: http://bit.ly/CECommins A memorial service will not be held at this time.
