To the Moultrie family,

My father must have spoken at Charles' service in 2008; I found this with his things after he passed away in December 2013 and thought you all might enjoy reading it:

"Charles Moultrie gave us 36 years of his life.

He shared himself with us for all those years and asked little in return.

Charles saw many changes over those 36 years--he was responsible for many of them even though he never really knew it at the time.

Every time he helped a child or family in need--and he helped hundreds of them over the years--he made a difference and changed our community for the better.

Every time he mentored a new probation officer, he changed our community in a subtle but positive way.

Charles is no longer with us. We'll never have the chance to tell him how much he meant to us. We can never properly thank him for all he did for us.

He lived a meaningful, fulfilled life and left the world a little better off than he found it.

Heroes are not always people who do heroic or extraordinary acts. Sometimes, they're regular people who do their jobs quietly and effectively without a lot of fanfare. They take care of and love their families and friends. They set and follow a moral and ethical path and live good and valuable lives.

Charles Moultrie was a hero.

'When I die, give what's left of me away.

And if you need to cry, cry for your brother walking the street beside you.

And when you need me, put your arms around anyone, and give them what you need to give me.

Look for me in the people I've known or loved.

Love doesn't die, people do. So, when all that's left of me is love, give me away.'"

Very sincerely,

Rachel Shoenthal

I am missing my friend. Charles as we at Interstate new him. I myself have known Charles for a very long time and he has never changed. He became a gooddd friend, mentor, the father I never had and the grandfather I wished I always wished I could have had all of this he new. Charles called me just about everyday, just to check on me. We talked about his daughter whom he loved more than anything. We talked about living, growing, learing, he told me to always listen and to pay attention. I am missing him so, my friend that I loved dearly. In closing I would like to thank Stacy for sharing her father a good man.

Charles: You will be missed terribly. My heart broke as I heard of your passing. I will miss our frequent and sometimes daily talks about the kids that we were involved with. I always appreciated the calls just to check on us if we weren't working on a case. The juvenile court has lost their best public relations icon. Rest in peace my friend until we meet again.

The most wonderful thing about Moultrie (did anybody ever really call him Charles?) was that he made everyone feel like they were his best friend. He made his rounds daily and left you with a smile. I retired from the Juvenile Court in 2004, but will always think of him roaming the halls there and stopping to say hello and pinching my arm before he left. I always wondered why he didn't retire, but I suppose he felt more at home there than anywhere else and maybe he knew how much he was needed by the kids and the staff alike. He bought a ridiculously ugly car from my dad many years ago and drove it around with pride, but mostly with humor, and he was a great comfort to me when each of my parents passed away. He was a good and gentle soul and I'm so very glad I had the opportunity to know him. He loved his daughter and all of is family so much and would light up the room with his smile whenever he spoke of them. Thanks for sharing him with us for so many years.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow? I will miss your joy and wit. Peace and grace go with you until we meet again. It was a blessing to have you as one of my elementary school teachers and later to share membership in the bond of fraternity. I thank you for all that you did for us during our fifth grade year.

To the family of Charles Moultrie, I offer my deepest sympathy for the loss of your loved one. I worked with "Mojo", as I affectionally called him, for 18 years at the Dekalb Juvenile Court. He was a true professional and a genuine person who touched many people's lives, including mine. May God bless you.

To the family of Charles Moultrie,
I don't know you all personally, but I feel as though I do. Mr Moultrie, had a story to tell about each one of you. Every morning, Mr. Moultrie and his warm smile would come to my office and share a story or two as he waited for his coffee to warm. May you find comfort in knowing that you were loved so dearly. God Bless.

Charlie, I am at such of a loss with out your bright smile and funny jokes. You welcomed me into your family of friends 10 years ago and filled my days with laughter and tears. I will miss your stories of your days in the Army and reminiscing with you about my days as an Air Force brat. You were one of the first ones to comfort me when my dad suddenly passed away. Even after I was transferred to the main office you continued to stay in touch via your many emails full of jokes and laughter. God bless you my friend and keep a place open for me when we meet again.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time. I just wanted to share moments of his life at work with you all. He would always stop by every day and say good morning-after he had gotten his morning cup of coffee! At any point and time in the day if he was passing by, he always came in and shared a story with me. No matter what kind of day I would be having, I would always have a smile on my face once he left my office. He would give me advice on old home remedies when he knew my daughter was sick-along with a story from his childhood of course! He gave me comfort and spoke words of encouragement to me during my period of loss. He would notice when I wasn’t at work, and when I returned, he would always tell me “I missed you the other day Holt”. He talked to everyone as if they were his longtime friend, no matter if he knew you for years or months. He shared his knowledge freely and would not hesitate to answer a question or provide guidance or assistance. He was the epitome of a strong black man and he will be greatly missed.
