Claire Commins

1924 - 2018

A first-generation American of Assyrian ancestry and the youngest of four children, Claire Sargis Commins was born in New Britain, CT in 1924. Her love of nursing began when she became a volunteer nurse's aid for the Red Cross. In 1944, she was accepted into the Cadet Nurse Corps, which trained nurses for readiness in World War II theaters. One of the proudest days of her life occurred in 1947 when she graduated from nursing school as a Registered Nurse. She then moved to Atlanta to live with her older sister and brother-in-law. During her career, Claire worked in several nursing positions including emergency room service, phlebotomist with Red Cross mobile blood units, and ophthalmologist nursing. Claire also was a pediatric nurse in both Memphis and Atlanta. While employed as a private duty nurse at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, she met the love of her life, Charles Emory "Bud" Commins. The two married in 1953 and adored each other throughout their 64-year marriage. The couple was blessed with one devoted son, Drew, and his loving wife Karen. At the age of 93, Claire passed peacefully on 9 May 2018.
