SINGLETON (James),
Claudette
Claudette James Singleton was born in Forsyth, Georgia, to the late Paul James and Lula Mae Davis. Mrs. Lula Davis later married Mr. Douglas Davis Sr., and together they raised Claudette and her two brothers, Douglas Davis Jr. and Cyrus Davis Sr. On October 20, 2025, at the age of 90, Claudette transitioned to our Lord, surrounded by her family and friends.
Claudette graduated from Hubbard Training School in Forsyth, GA, as the class valedictorian in 1953, followed by graduation from Fisk University in Nashville, TN, in 1957. While a student at Fisk, she met her husband, Fred H. Singleton Jr., at Tennessee State University, with whom she shared 54 years of marriage until he preceded her in death in 2012.
Claudette was a lifelong educator with a passion for elementary school students. She had a 30-year teaching career in Chattanooga, TN (Calvin Donaldson Elementary, St. Elmo Elementary), Atlanta City Schools (Rosalie Wright Elementary), and DeKalb County Schools (Briar Vista Elementary). Claudette taught multiple grades and served as the lead counselor at Briar Vista Elementary School. She loved her many students and often commented that her favorite grade to teach was 5th grade "because their minds are like sponges." Claudette frequently credited her success as an educator to the support of principals Carl White, Herbert Kaiser, and Rusty Stephens.
Claudette received a Master's Degree in counseling from Clark Atlanta University. She took graduate courses at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, as well as Georgia State University, and was recognized as a certified reading specialist. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, the American Association of University Women, and served as Secretary of the DeKalb County Counselors Association.
In addition to her love for teaching, Claudette enjoyed reading, decorating, and socializing. She was an avid gardener. Her favorite plants were hydrangeas, which were also her grandmother's favorite. She loved and cultivated multiple varieties of roses during her lifetime. Claudette credited her love of reading and gardening to her grandmother, Alberta Bankston.
Claudette always had a close relationship with God. During her youth, she was an active member of Kynette United Methodist Church in Forsyth, GA. Upon her marriage, she converted to the Roman Catholic faith. After moving to Atlanta with her family, she joined Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church and was a faithful member for 47 years.
Claudette was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and maternal grandparents, Evie and Alberta Bankston. Claudette leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Christa-Marie (Brett Westmoreland) Singleton, MD, MPH; one son, Lt. Colonel (USAF) James Frederic Singleton; one grandson, Matthew Christopher Thomas Horne, all of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Douglas Davis Jr. (Beverly Stanley) of Forsyth, GA, and Cyrus Davis Sr. of Atlanta, GA; nephews, Cyrus Davis Jr., Edward Davis, and Douglas Davis III (Trey) of Atlanta, SMSgt (USAF Ret.)
