David BROWN Obituary

BROWN, David James Rev. David James Brown, originally of Marietta, Georgia and most recently of Jeffersonville, Indiana, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2016. An ordained minister within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), David was a graduate of Lassiter High School (1988), holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Lynchburg College (1992), and a Master of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University (2000). In May 2000, David was ordained into Christian ministry in partnership with Peachtree Christian Church and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Over the course of his ministry, David served congregations in Georgia, Kentucky, and Indiana, most recently serving as the Senior Minister of First Christian Church in Jeffersonville, Indiana. David is survived by his 9 year old daughter, Madeleine (Maddy) Joy Brown of Louisville, Kentucky; his parents, Jay and Brenda Brown of Marietta; his sister and brother in-law, Rhonda and Chris Hale; nephew, Josh Hale and niece, Ansley Hale, all of Marietta. Over the course of his life and ministry, David exhibited great passion for many things. Early in his ministry, his travels to the Middle East were instrumental in developing his passion for justice in many areas, especially in the area of Israeli-Palestinian relations. He was deeply committed to areas of social justice, serving with Habitat for Humanity and a variety of mission and outreach trips and opportunities. David loved soccer, music (especially The Dropkick Murphys), and chili dogs from The Varsity, none of which surpassed his deep, abiding love for the Atlanta Falcons. The greatest passion and joy in his life was his daughter, Maddy. He was a loyal and devoted father, serving as a soccer coach and "Super Dad." She was the highlight of his life, and every decision made was done with her in his mind and heart. David's love of his daughter served as an example to others who knew him and knew how much she meant to him. A celebration of David's life will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 11am, Peachtree Christian Church in Atlanta. In lieu flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a college trust fund established for Maddy. Gifts may be sent and made to: Board of Church of Extension of Disciples of Christ, Inc.; PO Box 7030; Indianapolis, IN 46207-7030. Checks should be notated for the account of Madeleine J. Brown. I thought after a bit of time passed, it would be easier to to to find the words to say how much Dave meant to me but no words seem adequate. He was my pastor but first and foremost loved like family and my friend. It's obvious that many witnessed the compassionate, social justice side of Dave that made a conscious effort to reach out to those others found uncomfortable. As a disabled woman with crutches often feeling marginalized, being around Dave was just the opposite. He always took more time than most to make sure I was doing ok during some very difficult times. It says a lot about how wonderful someone was when with just a few hours a week for 5 years, Dave would have that deep of an impact on my life. In one form or another, I am certain any aspect of my own outreach will continue to be influenced by him. I am so proud and grateful to have known him. Anyone who knows me well will know him too. Much love and prayers to his family.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Brown & the special Hale Family: Though never having had the privilege to meet David Brown, it's pretty obvious he meant so much to so many. And because of the special gifts and unique talents he possessed there are probably many who feel such deep hurt over the sudden loss. Know that I, too, grieve along with you ... and pray that, in time, your families might somehow smile again. 'Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift' ... that of such a dear son, brother, uncle, dad -- and so much more. Much love to Ansley & Josh. Sincerely, Mr. T.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family. We were so glad to have shared so many happy moments in "Brownie's" life through David, from two 7 years old soccer player to David being Brownie's first wedding...a time to see what a wonderful man he had become. Again a passage of time but again a year ago a brief time together when the 3 Musketeers(Brownie, David and Kevin) were together to watch a Falcon game, seeing him as a Dad was a joy.

Know he has always and will always be loved by us...John and Sharon

There are no words. Our entire family is so very heartbroken by this loss. Dave baptized my daughter while at Park Christian, he served on the Commission on Ministry when I was ordained. Last summer, we laughed together during a hymn sing at General Assembly. He was in so many ways the pastor I hope to be - bright and articulate, sincere and welcoming. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who loved him.
