David Galloway Obituary

GALLOWAY, Rev. Dr.

David

The Reverend Doctor David Alan Galloway passed away December 6, 2024.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Grimes Galloway of Atlanta; son, David Thomas Galloway of Nashville; daughter, Mary Glen Galloway Giery (Michael); granddaughter, Harper of Saint Simons, GA; brother, Mitchell Glen Galloway (Cathryn) of Atlanta; and many nieces and nephews.

Born on June 30, 1954 in Atlanta, he was the son of Doris Pollard Galloway and Mitchell Olin Galloway. He grew up in Oakland City and East Point, GA, graduating from Briarwood High School in 1972.

He earned his BA from Emory University where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He stayed at Emory to earn a master's degree in psychology and theology, performing research with James Fowler for the book Stages of Faith. He completed his PhD at the University of the South.

David began his career in ministry as the Minister of Youth at Decatur First Baptist Church while still in school. He served as Associate Pastor of Northside Drive Baptist Church before finding his way to the Episcopal Church. He was ordained at The Cathedral of Saint Philip in Atlanta and served on the staff there as Canon Pastor, performing many baptisms and weddings.

He moved to Christ Church in Tyler, TX to serve as Rector. While in Tyler, he championed civil rights and helped start a community development program through a Pew Grant. He served the Diocese by helping candidates for the priesthood through the discernment process and teaching at the Episcopal Seminary in Austin.

He returned home to Atlanta to serve as Rector of Holy Innocents Church and Board Chair of Holy Innocents Episcopal School where he helped lead a strategic repositioning of the school.

David left parish work in 2007 and joined his brother at Galloway Consulting as a leadership coach in the healthcare industry. He continued that coaching work for the next 17 years, advising health system CEOs as well as clergy from across the country. He published a widely read, weekly blog "South of God" for over 5 years that shared his perspectives on a wide range of topics in his winsome and sometimes provocative narrative style.

David read voraciously and loved music. He pursued a wide variety of hobbies over the years, always looking to learn something new.

Visitation will be Friday, February 7, 2025 from 4 to 6 o'clock at The Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Rd., NW, Atlanta, GA 30305. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Contributions may be made in memory of David Galloway to The Monastery of The Holy Spirit, 2625 Highway 212 SW, Conyers, GA 30094.

David was the most wonderful man. I always felt that his friendship was unconditional. He was not judgemental and so kind. I was so lucky to have him as a friend.

I was very sad to hear of David's passing.
When David was the pastor at Christ Episcopal Church in Tyler he played the pivotal role in bringing the Episcopal Church back into my and my wife's life. He and I had a passion for duck hunting and spent many a morning in the cold with dogs on the lake.
His gift was showing by example that Everyone was someone that was tenderly loved by the Savior. That you could Believe with all your heart and Think at the same time. And that God was not afraid of hard Questions or Laughter.
I will miss him ---

Another member of our Briarwood Buccaneer family has gone to soon. I knew David through the golf team, and choir. Towards the end of his life, he reached out to me with words of encouragement when my wife went through a medical crisis. REST Well !!!

Please accept my sincere condolences. David was an exceptional person who always strove for excellence and justice. The world was made a better place from his presence and his work. He has been called home, and he is at peace and rest with our Father who art in Heaven.

He was the first Minister to treat me like a child of God after I came out in Tyler, Texas and had no where else to go.

Oh, my heart is broken to learn David has died. What a remarkable Renaissance man who taught me to be a better person. We met at Drepung Loseling in Atlanta years ago, and I followed him with interest and curiosity on FB, exchanging texts and books. RIP

Totally agree with Stu. Dave was a Force of Nature, always about others! When I semiretired in 2018, he was a key POC in the annual Dec Sigma Chi gatherings in Atlanta ensuring I and others nationwide knew about it every year. And of course when we were there, everyone wanted to hear about Daves latest sojourns but at the same time being about others, Dave made sure all of us would have a great time with catching up w others...he was a role model in so many ways...Bill Dodson, Sigma Chi, Emory U '77
