Dorothy Felton Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

FELTON, Dorothy "But friendship is precious, not only in the shade, but in the sunshine of life, and thanks to a benevolent arrangement the greater part of life is sunshine." Thomas Jefferson. A life well-lived. Dorothy Jean Wood Felton, 78, of Sandy Springs, GA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 with her loving husband, Jerry, and sons, Jethro and Bryan with her. Among her many accomplishments, Dorothy proudly represented Sandy Springs in the Georgia House of Representatives for 26 years, during which time she doggedly fought for her constitutents and their right to self-government. That battle was won after her retirement when the City of Sandy Springs was incorporated in 2005. She was a charter member of St. James United Methodist Church, a member of the Delta Gamma Fraternity, active in the Republican Party both locally and nationally, and was honored by many organizations throughout her distinguished career. During her lifetime, Dorothy accomplished many things but she was proudest of her family. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, J. Jerome Felton, Jr. of Sandy Springs, GA; son, Jethro J. Felton, III, and daughter-in-law, Lynn Hendrix Felton of Johns Creek, GA; son, F. Bryan Felton of Sandy Springs, GA; grandchildren, Brittany GeLee Felton of New York City; Jethro J. Felton, IV, of Flagstaff, AZ; Anna Caroline Felton and Andrew Bryan Felton of Sandy Springs, GA; brother, Frank E. Wood and sister-in-law, Beverly Wood of Tulsa, OK; niece, Angela Wood Snow of Dallas, TX; Frank Leslie Wood of Denver, CO; nephew, Glen Wood of Mt. Pleasant, SC; niece Susan Wood; sister-in-law, Diane Wood of Mt. Pleasant, SC. She was preceded in death by her twin brother, George Fedder Wood, II; her mother, Ima Chronister Wood; and Father George Fedder Wood. Mom, we love you and appreciate all that you have done for us during your amazing life. Your dreams and spirit live on. The world is a better place because of your dedication to excellence, hard work on behalf of your family, friends and constituents, and the dignity and spirit with which you lived... A celebration of Dorothy Wood Felton's life will be held at twelve o'clock noon on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at St. James United Methodist Church at 4400 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30342. A private graveside service will be held after the service. A reception will be held at the church following the service. The family will receive visitors at St. James UMC from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Friday evening, February 22, 2008. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. James United Methodist Church or Sandy Springs Society Foundation, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 will be appreciated.

I was thinking about Dorothy and Jerry today and albeit over ten years, I miss them so much. They are what I had always thought politics should be about. True public service and dedication. We had so many people like that in Sandy Springs. People that simply loved the country and wanted good government and were dedicated to the people and the children. Time has passed, but memories do not fade. Dorothy was truly a wonderful friend. She was always there when one needed a friend.

To Dorothys family we send our sincere condolences. What a wonderful mentor, friend, neighbor and hard working legislator she was! Seeing her in action at the Capitol is a memory long-remembered; attending neighborhood zoning meetings after those long days was genuinely appreciated. We have fond and lasting gratitude and memories. Thank you for sharing her with the grateful citizens of Sandy Springs aka "Dorothys legacy" ! My parents (Sid and Charlotte Wrightsman) would be sad to hear about your mother's passing, even more so than I. It was your mother who got my mother involved in politics. My parents thought very highly of her. My father worked with your dad at Smith Publishing, and when I came on-board there, I got to know your father, but never really got to know your mother. What wonderful people they are (were). Please know that my prayers are with your family during this very difficult time.

Phyllis and I are saddened to learn of Dorothy's passing. She was a great lady -- one of the very few Republicans I ever voted for!

Please accept our deep sympathies.
