To Earl's loved ones,

Here is a poem that I find comforting and hope you do as well. He was our friend for 48 years.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above. Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.

I need you here badly; you're part of my plan. There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years because you are only human, they will bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned. But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

Today at a time there are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain, then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."

And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile, knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low, just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free, remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

God Bless,

Dear Rhonda, Marshall & Mitchell:

We were phoned by the Stokes' about the tragic news. While it has been many years since we were neighbors, it brings back some warm and wonderful memories of the birthday parties and holiday gatherings we enjoyed with you all.

I often tell many how we know Earl Small and his family. Earl was a kind hearted, people person and family man who was always giving of himself to others. We were so proud to see his business flouish and family grow. Earl and I played some golf together and he tried repeatedly to get me on a motorcycle, something I regret not doing, especially with him as a teacher.

Rhonda & boys, Tammy and I want to deeply express our sorrow and want you to know as Christians, that we will pray for Earl, you and your family.

A Friend

October 26, 2008

Recently I overheard a father and daughter in their last moments together at an airport terminal. They had announced her departure and standing near the security gate, they hugged and he said, "I love you. I wish you enough." She in turn said, "Daddy, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Daddy."

They kissed and she left. He walked over toward the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say goodbye to someone knowing it would be forever?"

"Yes, I have," I replied. Saying that brought back memories I had of expressing my love and appreciation for all my Dad had done for me. Recognizing that his days were limited, I took the time to tell him face to face how much he meant to me.

So I knew what this man experiencing.

"Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever goodbye?" I asked.

"I am old and she lives much too far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is, the next trip back would be for my funeral," he said.

"When you were saying goodbye I heard you say, "I wish you enough." May I ask what that means?"

He began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone." He paused for a moment and looking up as if trying to remember it in detail, he smiled even more."When we said 'I wish you enough,' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them," he continued and then turning toward me he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory.

"I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much
bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye."

He then began to sob and walked away.

My friends, I wish you enough!

Sending a heartfelt sympathy for the Small family. You are in my prayers and thoughts. I'm so very sorry for your tremendous loss.
It was an honor to have known and worked for Earl. He was a smart, encouraging, funny, and very kind man.
I remember him saying to people in the store,"Don't pick on me because I'm Small!", and then just laugh.
He touched so many lives and would go beyond the norm to help people. I think he set a great example for living life to it's fullest. That life's accomplishments are not measured in passing tests, but being ourselves, learning from what we do, and being that special person to our friends, family, & loved ones. Believe in yourself and have fun in life.
He will be missed greatly. Thank you, Earl.

So sorry to hear of the loss of your
loved one. However, there is a
hope of seeing your loved one again.
At John 17:3, Jesus said, "This means everlasting life, their taking
in knowledge of you, the only true
God, and the one whom you sent
forth, Jesus Christ. I found this to
be a very encouraging scripture.

However, in order to receive ever-
lasting life, one must be resurrected
if they are sleeping in death. A good
example of this is when Lazarus, a
friend of Jesus and the brother of
Mary and Martha took sick and died Jesus out of love, resurrected him.

When you get a chance, please take
your Bible and read John 11:32, &
38-45.These scriptures are very en-
couraging. After reading these
scriptures you will see that by putting faith in Jesus the son of God,
that anything is possible, even being
resurrected once you have died.

Sincerely,

Mona Stephens

Earl Small was a legend in the Harley-Davidson community much like my father, Scott Whitson. Earl was my dad's boss for the past fifteen years: but, they have known each other since 1977. Earl will be remembered to most for his generosity not only to his community through his monthly events; but, for his giving and caring nature to my parents. For my dad's 55th birthday, Earl, knowing my mother could not fly, gave my parents a cross country trip by train to California all expenses paid. It was racing season and Earl could have just flown my dad back and forth for the races. But he didn't. My dad is orginally from California; so, he and my mom got to go see his brothers and their families. They also stopped in New Orleans and viewed the country from their passenger seats. It was a trip they will always hold dear to their hearts. this is just one of many acts of kindness Earl has shown to my dad over the past fifteen years. My dad and Earl met in 1977 at the factory in Milwakee for training schools. He will be sorely missed. Our prayers will be with his immediate and extended family. God Bless.
