JACOBY, Edwin A.

Edwin A. Jacoby of Jupiter Florida, former Chief Financial Officer for United Parcel Service, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2021, with his family by his side. He was 88 years old.

Mr. Jacoby was born in Berlin, Germany. When he was 7, his family fled war-ravaged Europe on one of the last ships before the Atlantic route closed. After settling in Brooklyn, NY and attending Brooklyn Technical High School, he enlisted in the US Army and served as a Sergeant stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After his service, Edwin graduated from Pace University and joined United Parcel Service as an Operating Center Auditor in 1957. One of his earliest assignments was in National Research and Development where he prepared the UPS's chief witness in its state-by-state hearings to gain interstate and intrastate transportation rights allowing UPS to expand its territory served to 48 states. This resulting Common Carrier designation was a turning point for UPS. He rose through several positions of increasing responsibility and in 1987 became UPS Finance Group Manager and Chief Financial Officer. In 1988 he was elected to the Board of Directors. Among his many achievements, he arranged the financing that transformed the company, adding air to ground service and expanding UPS internationally. He retired from UPS in 1994 having been an integral part of the company's evolution from servicing a few US cities to almost every country in the world.

Mr. Jacoby was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mildred Ruhmer Jacoby, three children, Emilia Jacoby-Twigg (Deborah) of Lexington MA, Martin Jacoby (Brenda) of Lafayette NJ, and Eric Jacoby (Allison) of Garrison NY, and 7 grandchildren who were the light of his life, Melissa, Scott, Emma, Sophia, Sara, Noah, and Nathaniel. He loved classical music, opera, history, reading and cooking for his family. He and his wife Mildred were passionate world travelers visiting dozens of destinations across the world. In retirement, he enjoyed the simple things in life with his family in their home in Jupiter as well as summering in Hyde Park, New York.

He is predeceased by his parents Martin R. and Else Topel Jacoby, his sisters Marianne Jacoby Koenig, and Ellinor Jacoby Leo.
