Elijah Culpepper Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

CULPEPPER, III, Elijah Elijah Hamilton Culpepper, III, a native of Cordele, GA and a long time resident of Athens, died Monday, July 20, 2009 after a long illness. A member of the Class of '62, University of Georgia, Culpepper also graduated from the University Law School in 1964. He served as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia and then practiced law with the Athens firm of Fortson, Bentley and Griffin. He also was an officer of Clarke Federal Savings and Loan which became a part of the Fulton Federal network of savings and loan associations. With a plethora of business and professional affiliations, perhaps his greatest link with the Athens and Clarke County communities was that he was the first chairman of The Classic Center Authority which he worked tirelessly to bring to fruition. If there were a volunteer opportunity, benefiting Athens, Clarke County and the University of Georgia, E. H. was the first to line up for service. He was President of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, the Athens Touchdown Club and the Athens Country Club. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army, Friends of State Parks and Historical Sites and the YWCO. He was a trustee of the Georgia Student Educational Fund. He was chairman of the Clarke County Civic Center Study Commission which planned and recommended the funding of The Classic Center by sales tax referendum. He was past president of the 316 Alliance Board of Directors and vice chairman of the Georgia Rail Passenger Authority, representing the 11th Congressional District. He was a member of the Athens Rotary Club and the Athens City Club. A past Chairman of the Northeast Georgia Surface and Air Transportation Commission, a 13 county authority created by the 1989 Georgia legislature whose purpose is to develop strategies for improved transportation infrastructure for the northeast Georgia region, Culpepper was chairman of the Georgia Heritage Association Center for the Arts at Tallulah Gorge State Park. He was a former chairman of the Northeast Georgia Roundtable, a 19 county economic development cooperative composed of Chamber of Commerce and business leaders in the northeast Georgia area. On a statewide level, he served as Chairman of the Transportation Committee and served as chair of the Tourism Committee of the Georgia Economic Development Association, the largest economic organization in state economic development efforts. A member of the AAA South Advisory Board, Culpepper was appointed by the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism as aboard member of the Regional Advisory Council, and at the time of his death was serving as chairman of the Regional Advisor Council for Service for District 5. He was also the Chairman of the Georgia bioscience joint Development Authority, an authority created by Gwinnett, Barrow, Oconee and Clarke counties to develop the 316 corridor as a linear technology corridor. He died serving his community. Culpepper was a partner in E. H. & Eye Barbecue Catering, an Athens premier BBQ rib establishment. A member of the First United Methodist Church (also a member of the Tuck Bible Class) Culpepper is survived by his wife Kitty Bolton Culpepper; his daughter, Evelyn Culpepper Dukes and son-in-law David Dukes of Atlanta, his son John Hamilton Culpepper and his wife Katherine Coleman Culpepper and grandchildren Hamilton and Mimi Culpepper of Athens. He is also survived by his sisters Mildred Culpepper Lapeza of Cordele, GA and Miriam Culpepper Chipley of Nashville, TN. Memorial services will be 11AM Thursday, July 23rd, at the Athens First United Methodist Church with Dr. Chuck Hodges officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the memorial service at the Classic Center. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Classis Center Cultural Endowment Fund, 300 Thomas Street, Athens, GA 30601. Mr. E.H. Culpepper was one of a kind. His passion and enthusiasm for his community and ours (Barrow County) were infectious. The Barrow County Chamber relied on him heavily during the time I was there. He always arrived with a smile and barbecue sauce. My deepest sympathies to you all.

Kitty, my heart goes out to you and your family. I shall always remember EH in the early days of your marriage as the "one in the kitchen" cooking good food. I hope to see you real soon but know that you hold a very special place in my heart. God bless you and yours in the days ahead.

My experience with EH was largely toward getting passenger trains in Georgia, I have visions of EH riding trains with me in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, Chicago, and Seattle. No one worked harder to get the next scheduled train to be for Emory and Athens - and truly all of Georgia - than EH.

EH will always be my model of the power of positive thinking.

E.H. was always a friend you could count on, regardless of the difficulty, complexity, or whether it was personal or professional. E.H. was always there to help with positive enthusiasm. He and Kitty have contributed so much to Athens and I know she will carry on his great legacy of community service. He will be missed by many.

July 23, 2009

May he rest in peace. E.H. was a friend and colleague to many in the Athens and UGA community. His graciousness and kindness will be long remembered. I know that he has been received by his Lord and Savior with the words, "Well done, my good and faithful servant. Enter into paradise."

Dearest Kitty, Evelyn, and John and your families, How sad I was to hear the news from Jake and Stan about EH. My "Buddy" gone? He was my very first boss, and the best one I ever had. He was so good to Bill, the boys and me when we were struggling that I could never thank him enough. He will forever be one of my favorite people, and I will always love him. I can't imagine coming back to Athens and not seeing him doing something wonderful for that community. He was a true one-of-a-kind. Please, God, give him a big hug from me.
With deep affection and admiration,
Sharon (Stanfill) Ferguson

Mrs. C,
I worked with EH on the Rail Program, and I admired him so much. I had first hand knowledge at how he would not take NO for an answer, and though that often drove me nuts I respected him for it. He was a good friend, and I know he loved you and the family more than his own life. RIP, my friend.

July 22, 2009

Kitty & Family: I extend my and my family's deepest sympathy in the loss of my Lil brother E.H. He indeed was a mighty oak and what he weaved here on earth, he will wear in Eternity. He gave God all that he asked and is now receiving all his promises. We can't all be apostles but each of us can emulate E.H.in being ,living epistles. Love to all.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Culpepper during the time I was employed at the Classic Center in the 90s. A couple of years ago I talked with him after one of the Cedar Shoals HS football games where he and his business partner catered the after-game meal for the football players. My prayers go out to family and friends as Mr. Culpepper will be be missed.

E H Culpepper was a friend. I was in ROTC with him at UGA in the late 50's and learned his full name. Over the years, I often addrressed him by his full name. We interacted in legal matters, banking matters and govenmental matters.

E H did a lot for Athens, Athens Area, Northeast GA and the State. He was personable and a delightful host.

E H will be missed. He left a lot of memories.

I did a lot of real estate closings with E.H. in the late 60's and 70's. It was always an adventure. We spent 10 minutes on closing and 30 minutes on tales of great humor. He was a great resource for Athens. He truly "gave" more back to the community than he ever took. God's blessings my friend.
