Evelyn Socoloff Obituary
Family-Placed Death Notice
Evelyn Guthman Socoloff, Daughter of Sigmund and Emma Guthman, widow of Eli Socoloff, died quietly Wednesday, February 2, 2005 after a short illness. She is survived by her nephews, Sigmund Held, of Nashville, Jerry Goldwasser, of Atlanta, Dan Goldwasser, of New York, and the children of Charles Held of Miami. Interment will be Sunday, February 7, 2005 at Crest Lawn Memorial Park in Atlanta, GA. There will be a private family gravesite service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donatations be made to the Atlanta Humane Society in her memory. The family will recieve visitors at her residence after 3 PM Sunday, February 6. I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of our long-time friend Evelyn Socoloff. I saw the notice only yesterday (April 26, 2005) in the Fulton County legal newspaper. I had tried, with no success, to locate Evelyn 4 years ago. Evelyn and her husband Eli were friends of my family during my entire childhood in Atlanta beginning in the early 1950s. Evelyn each year during the holiday season would bring us a round tin of her fruit-cake cookies, each one centered with a bright red cherry. My brothers and I would savor with great excitement each cookie as we slowly emptied the container. I recall many visits with Eli and Evelyn in our home. And, I still have distinct memories of Eli, along with Evelyn, sitting with his pipe in a deep literary or philosophical discussion with my father. My parents are now dead, with my mother having died in June 2004. Nonetheless, when I read yesterday about Evelyn's death, the first thought I had was that I wanted to telephone my mother and tell her about our wonderful friend's death. I am very sorry that I failed to locate Evelyn 4 years ago. We would like to have seen her again. May she rest in peace.
