I am so sorry to read of Dr. Barrett´s passing in the Miami U alumni magazine. He was a wonderful mentor during my undergraduate years
I was proud to assist with his graduate students´ research at the Ecology Research Center

I was a graduate student of Dr. Barrett´s while at Miami University´s Institute of Environmental Studies (IES) in the early 1980s, and my interactions with him had a strong and meaningful influence on my life and career. I decided to go to graduate school based on a recruiting talk he gave at my undergraduate college, I received a degree from a graduate program he helped create, I got my first exposure to ecological research working on his federally-funded research being conducted at a research facility that he created, I published my first scientific paper under his supervision, and I received a career-altering internship with the Smithsonian Institution because of his interest in me as a student.
In many ways Dr. Barrett was ahead of his time and an innovator in environmental education. He always exhibited a passion for teaching and encouraged his students, and himself, to apply lessons from ecology to our daily lives. In fact, at the end of one his classes he shared his personal aspirations which consisted of a list of 10 "Barrettisms": (1) Respect; (2) Reflect; (3) Live ecology daily; (4) Study nature as a textbook; (5) Design with nature; (6) Love life; (7) Manifest tenacity; (8) Make your profession your hobby; (9) Communicate; and (10) Sacrifice. Looking back on all my interactions with Dr. Barrett, and all that he accomplished, it´s clear to me that he lived up to his personal goals.
Perhaps more important than his effect on my own life has been the impact of the programs and facilities he helped create. These have benefited the lives of hundreds of students who trained for a variety of careers in environmental science. Indeed, IES has graduated over 600 students, and, in my view, his enduring legacy will not only be the many ways he enriched the lives of his students but also the continued productivity of the institutions he helped create.
The world is a significantly better place as a result of all his efforts and he will be missed.
