Henry MOOG Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

MOOG, Henry, Jr. HENRY B. MOOG, JR. Henry was an Atlanta native born at Piedmont Hospital on September 19, 1938, son of Syril and Henry B. Moog, Sr. He attended E. Rivers Elementary School, and Northside High School before getting his B.S. in Business from The University of Alabama. After graduation, he started his only salaried job when he enlisted in the US Army Security Corps where he discovered his love for travel. During his two years of duty when he was stationed in both New Jersey and California, he traveled throughout the Asia, before his honorable discharge with the ranking of Captain. When he returned to Atlanta, he began working for his father's real estate firm, Clover Realty. After a few years, his entrepreneurial spirit took over and he started Inman Realty where he renovated homes in the emerging neighborhood of Inman Park. He then became restless focusing on one neighborhood, and formed a charter travel business specializing in flights to Europe, and grew the business to where it ultimately was the largest revenue producer for one of the major airlines before selling the business in the early 1980's to his key employee. His international travel also helped him in the creation of his next two businesses. While traveling in Europe, he began buying Chinese Export porcelain. Not knowing much at first, he began purchasing pieces purely based on his appreciation of the beauty. However, he very quickly became fully engaged in the history of the trade, and was ultimately regarded as one of the world's most renowned experts in the field. While building H. Moog Fine Porcelains, his love for development and real estate never waned. His pioneering spirit drove him and a friend to accidentally discover the Turks and Caicos Islands on New Years' Eve 1970/ 1971. He fell in love with the islands, with both the beauty of the nature and the beauty of the people, and spent the next 41 years enjoying the interaction with both. He ultimately created a vacation rental business that he ran for over 25 years. He was a true renaissance man, who had passion for so many interests. He always had a great eye for beauty, aesthetics, and attention to detail, whether through his love of antiques, design and architecture, or endless views of the ocean or layered mountains. Another love was his insatiable passion for food, which often dictated where his global travels took him. One of his greatest loves was to share his culinary creativity with friends who shared in his passion. He was always able to find a way to make a living in his hobbies, and his enthusiasm for his work was unsurpassed. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dinah Dees Moog. He is also survived by his children, Henry B. Moog, III (Tripps), his wife Wellons Mast Moog, and their children Grace, Dailey, Cooper and Anna. He is also survived by his daughter Shandon Moog Benedict, her husband William Noble Benedict, III, and their children Anderson and William. Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Monday September 24, 2012 at H.M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill Chapel with the family receiving guest one hour prior to the service and following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Henry's memory to the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University, Development Office, 1762 Clifton Road, suite 1400, Atlanta, Ga. 30322, or Hospice Atlanta, Office of Advancement, Visiting Nurse Health System, 5775 Glenridge Drive, NE, Suite E200, Atlanta, Ga. 30328. I only just heard of Henry's passing. I am deeply saddened!

No man dies when he lives in the mind of others, Henry lives here.

I first met Henry when we visited Provo in 1987, fell in love with Chaulk Sound and purchased a property from Henry on the sound across from Casuarina Cottages. While Princey Harris, on Henry's recommendation, built our house, Henry offered to sell us at cost many of the house's essentials which he had left over from previous construction. Over the years we met him several times both here and when he and his wife graciously invited us for dinner in Atlanta while I was attending a conference. We developed a friendship, which seemed so easy for Henry with his outgoing manner, and we were hoping to further that friendship with my retirement last month to Provo. Unhappily my neighbor let us know of his death, which saddens me deeply. Rest in peace Henry.

Dinah,
I'm deeply sadden to learn of Henry's passing. You and I briefly met when I lived with Henry in a house on Lindbergh in 1963.I knew Henry in college and he offered me 'boarding' for my one year in Atlanta. I recall you two had just met and were dating. I moved back to Alabama shortly there after....However, I still consider that year one of the best of my life. Henry was definitely one of a kind, a complete individual. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Dinah,
Mary Bugg Callahan and I had planned to come today, but had a last minute change of plans. We both were saddened by the news of Henry's death, and we remember how much fun we had back in the late '70's, and how much Henry changed our lives with all those trips to London (and Munich) at "Agency International"!
You and Tripps and Shandon are very much in my thoughts and prayers and hopes for the future.
Sincerely, Donna- Agency International

Dinah, I learned today that Mr. Moog had passed away. He was one of my first clients and he was always so nice and easy to deal with. Over the years he taught me so much about Chinese export paintings and frames. He was very generous and had a great eye, not only for artwork, but beautiful properties in the Turks and Caicos. Jim & I will miss him. Our deepest sympathy. Freda Durrett Nichols & Jim Nichols

Dear Dinah,

I am so sorry for your great loss. I have known Henry since our days at E. Rivers and Northside, but never knew him well. What an interesting life he led and died much too soon.

May God's peace surround you and your family.

Dear Dinah,

It gives me chills of thankfulness to have had the opportunity to meet you and Henry for just a few moments in my life. As soon as I delivered that Swedish Mora clock to your home, I knew I was with very special people in a very special place.

That you and he had some time to share that two-century old time piece at your summer home, I hope and hope and hope.

This weekend my grandson will be attending Bert Adams Scout Reservation, named after the camp that your Henry attended as a youth and that I directed several years ago. This gives to me the warm feeling of connectedness through the international "Brotherhood of Scouting."

Thank you for being the good wife to the good Scout.

What a fine mind, gentlemanly nature, and wonderful dry wit Henry Moog possessed. Dinah, my wife and I visited your porcelain store on many occasions and always came away enlightened and lightened by the convivial conversation. May Henry's spirit continue on at a more boundless pace! We will miss him.
