SMITHSON II, Howard Lee
April 19, 1976 - July 18, 2025
Lee Smithson was a bright light in the lives of all who knew him. He was a devoted son, a loving father, and a loyal friend whose presence brought warmth, laughter, and comfort. Known for his generosity and his big heart, Lee gave freely of his time and love, always finding ways to show up for the people he cherished.
Saturday mornings meant Starbucks sandwiches and drinks, hand-delivered by Lee, who delighted in the small rituals that brought his family together. On Sundays, he proudly claimed the title "Grill Master," filling the air with the delicious aroma of expertly grilled meats and vegetables—his way of sharing joy and creating memories around the table.
Lee was a pillar of support for his parents, especially during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. He lived close to home and never wavered in his kindness, respect, and care for his family.
Born in New York City and raised in Atlanta, Lee graduated from Morehouse College in 2006 and later earned his MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2024. His professional life included leadership roles at GlobalTech Financial and Avanos Medical, and he brought the same passion and dedication to his entrepreneurial venture—a trucking company he co-founded, driven by a vision for growth and independence.
Lee's faith was his foundation. A faithful member of Mount Paran Baptist Church, he faced his illness with remarkable strength, courage, and grace. Even in the most difficult moments, he never lost hope. With unwavering trust in God, he often said, "One day at a time. It's all good and all is well. No complaints!"
Lee was truly a champion—resilient, optimistic, and full of life. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and joy that will continue to inspire all who had the blessing of knowing him.
He is survived by his mother, Carolyn Hogan Byrd (Al); father, Howard Lee Smithson, Sr. (Cheryl); daughter, Elliya Lee Smithson; brothers, Anthony Reynold Baldwin, Jr. and Alfred M. Byrd II; sister, Heather B. Asher (Carl); aunts, Maryann Hogan and Beverly Smithson; uncles: Walter Q. Hogan (Linda), Eddie LeRoy Hogan and Juan Ocasio (Colombina); cousins: Bruce Baker, Alexis Ocasio Sandmann (Ben), Elena Ocasio, Tometro Hopkins, Kateri Cummings, Walter Q. Sellers (Tracie), Kimberly Willis; and numerous other close relatives and friends.
Rest in Peace, Son. The Lord is with you, and you are with Him!
