Howard Stillwell Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

MR. HOWARD STILLWELL Was born in East Lake, GA, on March 16, 1922. Mr. Stillwell lived in Atlanta all his life. He attended Boys High School, where he set and held the state 100 yard dash record for many years. He went on to get a degree in Mechanical Engineering. From Georgia Tech where he graduated with honors. Before being shipped out in WWII, he married Jeanne Davidson on June 3, 1944. He served as a Lt. J.G. in the Navy in the Pacific Front on an ammunition ship and 2 destroyer escorts. Two of his ships were blown up. He joined Scripto and became V.P. of Sales and Marketing at the age of 28. It was during this time that he became Chairman of the Organizational Executive Committee which made the "idea" of a new social club into a reality. The Cherokee Town and Country Club was developed during 1955 and Mr. Stillwell was elected as first President and served 2 terms. It was with great pride that he participated in the official opening on Saturday October 13, 1956. After leaving Scripto Mr. Stillwell went on to tackle several start-up companies but the job he loved the most was Title Insurance. He began under the tutelage of Trammel McIntire at Pioneer Title which merged with Chicago Title. Mr. Stillwell pioneered the agency program, a partnership of underwriters and attorneys in Georgia. This is now considered the standard in the title insurance in Georgia. Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Davidson Stillwell; son, Howard III, Morrisville, VT; daughter, Kathleen Myers, Roswell; son, Lee D. and his wife, Joyce, Tallahassee, FL; grandson, Jameson; sister, Beth Wheeler, Montgomery; brother, Nick, Blackshear, GA; and brother, Fred, Marietta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Memorial Fund. Memorial services will be held Monday, August 4, 2003 at one o'clock at Northminster Presbyterian Church. Rev. James Simpson officiating. A reception will follow after services. H.M. Patterson and Son Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., Atlanta, GA 30328. 404-851-9900.
