Memories and Condolences
for James Chapman

Not sure what to say?

July 14, 2010

My heart simply goes out to Katie and to the Chapman family. Even though we've never met, my name is also James Michael, and I go by Jay. That's why I feel like I can relate. Although Jay had a much better firm in life than I did, as he was a teacher and coach. My life is completely different as I'm 15 years older than him at 44. Life is just SO unfair, and I know the one-year anniversary is probably the most difficult ever. RIP Jay

There are no words to describe the hole left in the heart of the South Cobb Social Studies Department. We all have our special memories of Jay, and we now strive to hold on to and share those memories with those who also loved him. I, for one, will deeply miss my "baseball" and "hall duty" buddy. Jay was a truely exceptional young man and we are all richer because he touched our lives. In the words of a colleague, "Jay was a modern, southern gentleman."

Katie,
I am deeply sorry for your loss.

You do not know me, but my 23 year old sister was killed in a car accident on April 13, 2009. She was engaged to be married June 6, 2009, in Hilton Head, SC. She was a Special Ed teacher at Grovetown Middle School. She was on her way home when she ran off the road hydroplaned and hit a tree. I can tell you I know your pain. If there is anything I can do please let me know. Contact me anytime [email protected]

I cannot begin to tell you how much I will miss Jay. He is an amazing person and I will cherish the memories I have of him forever. To Jay's family and Katie, my thoughts and prayers are with you. SCHS will never be the same without him. He truly was the best in so many ways. To his parents, thank you for raising such a good, solid man. I am a better person for knowing him. He will be missed by so many.

To the Chapman Family and Ms. Walker.
Please accept our deepest condolences and these words of encouragement on Jay's behalf.

How can one ever prepare the heart
for the loss of a dearest loved one?
Who thinks to fear this happening
To a son so vital, a fiancé so young?

Our Heavenly Father feels your grief
He never meant for us to have this pain
He’ll soon undo this harm thru his Kingdom
Then death’s hard loss will be our joyous gain.

Your Jay is merely sleeping in Jesus’ eyes
And, by him, can be just as easily awakened
In perfect condition, and beautiful surroundings.
Under God’s care, never to be forsaken .

How can we receive these Kingdom blessings?
Jesus said ‘take in knowledge of my Father and me
Accept only what’s proven from the Bible’s viewpoint
Only then can you come to know us intimately’.

I had the greatest of respect for Jay and the way he worked with his students and other teachers. Jay was so friendly and would do anything he could to help others. Jay will be missed at South Cobb but also, I'm sure, by everyone else his life touched. My prayers are with you as you deal with this loss.

To the family and friends, let God be with you during this terrible time. My heart goes out to you and you all will continue to be in my heart and prayers.

To Katie, "it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all". I cannot in any imagine what you are going through, but please know that everyone who has ever come in contact with Jay is praying for you especially, as well as both families. Be strong and always remember the LOVE shared between the two of you. I will continue to pray for all affected by this tragedy.

My son Marcus was fortunate enough to have Jay coach him in both basketball and baseball this season. He was interested in Marcus' development on & off the court and for that, I am truly grateful and appreciative. Coach was supportive, caring and believed in his players even during times when they didn't always believe in themselves. He always stayed positive and that is one of the many things that I respected. We learned of the tragedy while on vacation and understandably, it hit us very hard. Please know that we have the family and Katie in our prayers and that Jay was one of those individuals who made a real difference in the lives of the students that he taught in the classroom, on the court and on the field. He will be deeply missed. May your faith in God help you during this difficult time.

To Katie and The Chapman Family~

I could not have asked for a better colleague or friend. I will miss Jay at SC, especially on workdays when he would always ride with "the girls" to lunch. We were looking forward to many years of memories with the two of you and this tragic accident has left a hole in our hearts.

Please know we loved him, will miss him, but we will never forget him.

Joe and Janet: we just saw Jay's notice in the paper, and realized who he was. Our love and prayers go out to you in this unexpected and tragic situation. We think of our years at West End Baptist, and watching you grow up and marry. Please know that we continue to share thoughts, prayer and love, as you deal with this. Our love to Mary, too. May 29, 2009

At the beginning of baseball season, my son Kyle came home and said "Coach made me run extra today." I asked him why, and he said "because I made a comment that was disrespectful." As a result of this, I knew I liked Coach Chapman right away! He was the type of person I was happy allowing my son to spend so much time with. A real stand up guy who led by example! Chapman and Walker families, please know our prayers and condolences are with you - Thank you for sharing Jay with the athletes and families of South Cobb High School.

Jesus said "He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die". Jay's smile, love and laughter will forever live in the halls of South Cobb High School. He definitely made a difference to so many lives and his presence will be missed. May God bless and keep Jay's family, fiance and friends through this difficult time. Let Jay's goodness and light be an example for all.

Coach Chapman was a wonderful coach, teacher, mentor, friend and just upstanding fine young man. He coached my nephew for three years and was his History teacher this last semester. He has spent all three years encouraging and supporting his developement on and off the field. We were blessed to have known him and loved him and Katie. To Katie and the Chapman family may God give you strength. He is your angel now and will be there to help you carry on.

To the Chapman Family,
I only knew "Mr. Chapman" through my female students who were so enamored of him! One student couldn't go five minutes in my class without mentioning his name - that's a lot of times over an hour and a half - during English class, no less! I understand the young lady learned enough to pass her U.S. History EOCT as well. Mr. Chapman has certainly affected the hearts and minds of many at South Cobb. May the good memories of this dynamic, intelligent and attractive young man and his contributions to our youth help ease your sadness. God bless you all during this time.

To Katie and the Chapman Family,
My deepest and heartfelt sympathies are with you as you go through this difficult time. I had the privilege of knowing both Katie and Jay during our days at West Georgia, and was very saddened to hear of this news. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. May God be with you.

The Little Ship
I stood watching as the little ship sailed out to sea. The setting sun tinted his white sails with a golden light, and as he disappeared from sight a voice at my side whispered, “He is gone”.
But the sea was a narrow one. On the farther shore a little band of friends had gathered to watch and wait in happy expectation. Suddenly they caught sight of the tiny sail and, at the very moment when my companion had whispered, “He is gone” a glad shout went up in joyous welcome, “Here he comes!”

Dear Chapman Family and Katie,
We met Jay through my son, John. He was a groomsman at John and Laurens wedding.
We have you in our prayers, We pray that God blesses you with His peace.

I have only known Jay for a short time, but during our planning periods, we spent every spare moment we had talking- Jay was a joy. Even though many people today have a cynical outlook, not once did I ever hear Jay be negative. It was refreshing to hear his jokes and his "things will work out" attitude reinforced my personal beliefs. I know that Jay has gone to a better place!

Bob and I will always cherish the memories we have of Jay and Mike; playing ball, ushering at Turner field, and just hanging out and being great friends. Jay was an incredible man and friend. He never met a stranger and was a great mentor to many students. He was always smiling and befriending staff and students alike. Dearest Janet and Joe: I can't even begin to imagine the pain you are enduring after Jay's tragic death. Words are inadequate to express the sorrow we all feel for your loss. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time.

Wendy & Brent Jackson & Family

May 28, 2009

Janet & family - I was shocked to hear about Jay's death. I know this is an extremely sad time in your lives. Mrs. Chapman, you will always be the most remembered kindergarten teacher in the Jackson household. I believe that Jay got your teaching genes and became the best History teacher. I know by reading all these messages that he was truly loved and will be missed. I am praying for your entire family and Katie's as well. Brent lost his little sister in almost the same way and at the same time in her life. A comfort is knowing that Jay loved the Lord and that he is sitting at the feet of our Savior. Remember how much God loves you and Jay and that His plans are always better than ours. We love you Mrs. Chapman!!!

Jay taught right across the hall from me and we would spend many mornings doing hall-duty together. I will really miss those times where we could talk about the day's news and what was going on with his baseball team. It will not be the same at all next semester without him. Jay was one of the few fellow teachers that would laugh at my dumb jokes and that is a rare thing indeed. I've never meet a young man who could talk with enthusiasm about drink coozies for the wedding. He will be in my memories for as long I am. We shall honor him by doing what he would expect us to do; keep teaching and coaching.

Jay was a dear friend to our son Craig and usually in the company of Mike Jones at our home or on the sporting event trips they’d all planned as a threesome. The Georgia Tech versus University of Miami banter was always in high gear. We had the pleasure of meeting Katie at Craig’s wedding last year when Jay did the honor of serving as one of Craig’s groomsmen at his and Jessica’s wedding in Melbourne Beach, FL. I know they were all looking forward to the occasions they would share as young married couples together in the future. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chapman family and Katie and her family as well as the many lives Jay has blessed with his friendship.

In Memory:

A thousand times we will need you,
A thousand times we will cry,
If love alone could have saved you,
you never would have died,
A heart of gold stopped beating,
two twinkling eyes closed to rest,
God broke our hearts to prove he only took the best,
never a day goes by that you’re not in our hearts and souls.

The first time I ever met Jay he was a referee for my intramural flag football games. He brought a positive outlook to the field and encouraged good sportsmanship to all of us. Every time I was at any intramural game and Jay was playing with his team he was always encouraging them to keep playing hard until the game was over. I have known Katie since I was in high school and she has always been a shining example of a positive person who loved and cared for others. Katie and Jay were both perfect examples of the people that we all strive to become.

May God Bless the Chapman family and Katie during this time. Let us celebrate the times we shared with Jay during this time of loss.

Dear Chapman Family, Jay worked for me as an official in multiple sports for 3 years. He also played under my programs and excelled in everything. I named Jay and Katie as well, as athletes of the year winners more than once. They were both very special people here at the University of West Georgia. I spent a lot of time with Jay, naming him to countless all star teams and driving him and his teammates to State Tournaments, all around Georgia from GSU to Athens. Jay was not only one of my best ref.'s and best player's but I considered him a good friend. It was a joy to watch him play sports and I've missed him since he graduated and went on with his life. I want to honor Jay by naming our Intramural Athlete of the year award the "Jay Chapman Athlete of the year award" I know these words pale and fail in trying to give you solace in your time of grief but it's really all we have. Just know, God is in control and He's had a plan since before Jay was even born. Even though we don't understand he does and we can't know everything now but the Father does offer us a way to be enlightened and try to understand a little. It's in his Word! He gives us a desire in our soul to have a longing for a relationship with Him and there he reveals many things to us. I pray the Holy Spirit will comfort you through this time in your lives.
With deepest sympathy Big Ed! Intramurals, University of West Georgia [email protected] God Bless!
