I was saddened to hear of Coach Stegall's passing. He was one of the first male teachers to join the faculty at my elementary school, WD Thomson, in Decatur (ca. 1958). Although I did not have him for a teacher, he, along with his colleague Mr. Osteen, served as a role model for us boys. He was a friendly and dedicated professional. One day my 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Jones, was reading us a story when she came to a particularly suspenseful moment. She read, “There was knock at the door.” As if on cue, there was indeed a knock at the door, and we all screamed and jumped out of our seats. It turned out to be Mr. Stegall, who had no idea what he had done, but with his wide grin and joyous sense of humor, quickly joined us in our merriment, laughter, and sighs of relief. The moment could not have been scripted any better.
When I was thinking of becoming a teacher, it was pointed out to me that I was entering a profession dominated by females, but role models such as Coach Stegall showed me that my choice would not be something extraordinary.

He was one of the two first male teachers at W. D. Thomson Elementary School in the 1950's. Though I was not in his class I remember him as a cheerful and energetic teacher. He broke new ground at WDT.

Coach Stegall was a wonderful mentor during my days at Towers High School. There are a handful of people that made a major impact on my life and he was one. A great man and he will be missed.

To the Stegall Family: Please take a moment to read the many stories, messages, and memories of "our" Mr. Stegall on Facebook's Dunwoody High Memorial page. It's always where we go to remember, grieve, and rejoice over our entire DHS family: students, parents, and faculty members we've loved and lost.
Respectfully, The Students of Dunwoody High School

I am very sad to hear about Mr Stegall's passing. As a member of Dunwoody's first graduating class (75), I have fond memories of Mr Stegall's time at Dunwoody. When Mr Stegall was first appointed a lot of people thought he was just another ex football coach appointed to be an administrator. Fortunately for those of us who graduated from Dunwoody, Mr Stegall was more interested in hiring good teachers who were interested in educating students. Mr Stegall had a great part in my education, by guiding my high school through its infancy and laying a foundation which led me to Washington and Lee (79A) and University of Georgia (82 JD). I was also able to meet my wife of over thirty years in the very first day of class at Dunwoody ( she sat in front of me on 10th grade World History class with Mr Mattasits and Coach Jones).

My deepest condolences to each family member. Ron was a special friend and classmate at Jacksonville State University so many years ago, and I shall always have the fondest memories of him. May family members be assured your loss is felt by many, many old friends. May Ron rest in peace.

Mr.Stegall was a blessing in my life. First when I was a student at Dunwoody High School, and later when I returned to this National School of Excellence to do my student teaching. I was proud to return to his school and learn my vocation with him. God Bless You All, LisaGaye Sawhill Montgomery
