James STRIBLING Obituary

STRIBLING, Jr., James Yancey June 13, 1936 February 11, 2018 James Yancey Stribling, Jr. was born in Walhalla, SC on June 13, 1936. He was the only child of Helen Sue Davis and James Yancey Stribling. The family settled in Forsyth, GA prior to World War II where Yancey's father served as a civil engineer and his mother was a devoted wife and mother who also worked part time at the local bank. He was a student at Pine Crest School, Banks Stephens Elementary and Mary Persons High School. Yancey attended The University of Georgia where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, Georgia Beta chapter. After college, he moved to Atlanta, GA where was employed with I-T-E Circuit Breaker Company and concluded his career as Marketing Director at Siemens. He happily retired at age 55. He was a life member of the Capital City Country Club in Atlanta and a member of Highlands Country Club in Highlands, NC where he was President from 1999-2000, a member of the Board of Directors and served as the President of the Highlands Country Club Community Association. Yancey and a small group of Club Officers also spearheaded renovations of the Club's golf course and facilities, returning it to its former glory. He was a member at Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, NC, Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club in Cashiers, NC and his beloved Homosassa Fishing Club in Homosassa, FL where he served on the Board of Directors. Yancey was a past President of the Atlanta Classic Foundation, the organization which presented the Atlanta Classic PGA tour event and was the driving force behind the charitable arm associated with the event. As a young man, Yancey was proud to have received the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America, where he also was awarded The Order of the Arrow. An active sports enthusiast throughout his life, Yancey enjoyed fishing, snow skiing, tennis and running, and had an abiding passion for golf. Yancey was married to the love of his life and best friend, Dorothy Orme Stribling, for more than 57 years. He often said he fell in love with Dorothy when they first met in 1957. He was the proud father of two loving children, Susan Orme Stribling and James Yancey Stribling III, father-in-law to Jennifer Distler Stribling and adoring grandfather to William Foster Stribling I and James Yancey Stribling IV, who fondly called him "Poppy." As Yancey courageously and optimistically battled the illness that ultimately took him from his family and friends, he never complained, but celebrated what a remarkable life he lived. He often said he was blessed to have the support and friendship of so many people who helped him relish his time on earth. He also reflected on the guidance his parents instilled upon him as a young man which helped steer him in the correct direction on the path of life. They taught him to understand right from wrong, appreciate good manners and respect others. To anyone who knew or met Yancey, his zest for life was apparent. He made friends wherever he went. He was especially content when playing golf with his buddies, fishing with Yancey, enjoying Highlands with Dorothy, cheering on his beloved Georgia Bulldogs with Susan or spending time with his grandsons. Above all, Yancey had a deep passion for his friends and family. He never tired of reminding them all how blessed he was to have them in his life. As a family member noted this week, "he will leave a big space." Rest in peace, Yancey. Family and friends will remember and celebrate Yancey on Friday, February 16, 2018 with a service at 1:00 p.m at First Presbyterian Church, 1328 Peachtree Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30309 and a reception immediately following at Capital City Club, 53 West Brookhaven Drive NE, Atlanta, GA 30319. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who would like to commemorate Yancey's life please make donations to Children Health Care of Atlanta.
